605 2.1 TD Head Gasket - Advice please??

Post by mg46783 »

Hi folks...
well, I just thought I'd mention this...cos its not one Ive tackled before! ( and will probably swear I'll never do another !! judging by progress thus far )
Im just wondering if any ones done one before and has any special thoughts'tips..ie, "dont undo this or - never do that - or - make sure you do the other ! -- you know the sort of thing.
Its deffo blown its gasket... probably Im assuming fan failure, Im half way through stripping it... finding the timing belt/engine mounting side a REAL pain.... Anybody got any advice for me / Im thinking someone MUST have done one before !!!
cheers for now

Hi Mike,
Well I havn't changed a head gasket on a 605, but I have on an XM TD12 (same engine). So the truths that apply to the XM might not apply to you. First, according to Citroën, you have to take the engine out to change the head gasket (Haynes says so too), not true! Although it's a tremendous squeeze getting the head off the block (it's inclinded backwards in the XM) it can be done. The trick is to undo the right hand (from drivers seat) engine mounting (with a trolley jack under the engine), lower the engine slightly and move it forward as much as it will go. On the XM you don't even have to take the turbo off.
Make sure you lock the 1)camshaft 2)crankshaft 3) injection pump before you start screwing things off. You can buy a proper kit for this from a number of motor factors.
While you're at it it would be a crying shame not to replace the cam timing belt, all cam pulleys and tensioners and the water pump (since you've got to take the lot off to get at the pump when i gives up).
Once you've got the head off, you should check it for flatness, they have a tendency to warp (and I'm not talking about beam me up Scotty).
You can also check that he turbo looks O.K. and the mechanical parts don't look like they are about to drop off (wastegate actuator etc.)
If you don't already have a Haynes scrapbook, it's worth getting just to get the tightening torque procedure right (it also explains the positioning of the cam/pump/crank stops). Buy new head bolts - the old ones are useless once they have been tightened. Follow the tightening sequence to the letter! If you've had any problems with ticking tappets, now's the time to fix them (if you can't stand the noise, otherwise they go many thousand miles even if they tick loudly at tick over).
Change all the external belts as a matter of ease of access. Check the condition of the metal water pipe buried under mounds of road dirt down by the crankshaft pulley. Check the state of the rubber cooling hose that goes from the diesel pump cold start mechanism to the engine block - it sits under a constant oil drip from the plastic induction pipe from the intercooler (rubber ) hose to the manifold. Mine had rotted away and caused my head gasket problem ( it blew at 90 on a motorway and the gasket was a gonner before the BIG RED light woke up)!
Same applies to injectors and pre-heaters, you'll never have it so easy to get at them, so take the chance!
That's about all I can remember, but it was an XM, not a 605.
Best of luck!

HI....thanks for your time on this one - very much appreciated.
There are a few things in there...pulleys / water pump etc that as you say , makes sense to replace..plus of course, the head skimmimg... Ive got one immediate problem... teh crank pulley !!! Got the nut off....not the pulley - it refuses point blank to move! Any ideas???????
I also think, looking at it, that the manifolds are going to be REAL PAIN - (?)--
TOO - I cant for the life of me find where you lock the crank - for timing -- Ive locked the inj. pump and cam...so obviously the crank will be in place - TILL I take the belt off.... Any ideas where the hole is???
Also, do you happen to know if the alloy part of the engine mntng has to part company with the engine??? It seems impossible....Ive got all the bolts (about 5 ) loose, but they wont come totally out - no room...unless I jack the engine higher than highh.. but I was wondering - Does it actually HAVE to come off anyhow????
All this is of course to get the t belt off - never mind the head !!!
Its not long since had glows - WHAT A JOB !!! Wish they'd waited till the gasket had blew!
Ok...well, thats todays installment - Any further comments very much appreciated !
Thank You
Mike

There is a hole in the block on the front towards the clutch end of the motor. Its not easy to find due to all the crud. I think its 8mm and if you stick a rod through it with the engine at T.D.C. it will lock the flywheel. To remove the crank pully you'll have to use a puller and BE CAREFULL, the pulley is in two parts vulcanised together. You can easily pull the outer section off if you're not carefull and they AIN'T cheap! Try tapping it once you've got some tension on it.
The 605 obviously differs from the XM when it comes to the engine mounting - on the XM its quite (!?) easy to remove the whole mounting, so afraid I can't help you there.

Hiya mate....THANKS for yor input! The latest is -- wait for it ---- well, the heads off ! the pully's K*******d (!) dont ask.. they dont like chisels and it just would NOT part company. The decapitation was on "L" of a job!!!! and I am not relishing putting it back. I honestly think I should have performed full surgery and took the engine out . Putting the head back will be a real dog.. and I think Im going to have put all the head / manifolds / turbo..etc./. in place and then "slide" the head gasket in... Doing it any other way will duff it Im sure!
There is another point here.... The heads gone for skimmimg.. so obviously Im going to need a thicker h.gasket...It already has a 2 hole gasket on.. Any ideas what it will need/take?? I mean , I know this is going to depend largely on how much has been skimmed but.. well, any input will be appreciated.
I think thats it for now... thanks again!!!

Hi Mike,
I suppose you know that the 2.1 TD12 got a reinforced head gasket in late '93?? Earlier cars wouldn't have this and are therefore much more likely to blow. I have heard that all current stock is of the reinforced type.

hi again....
yes well, I ordered up all the parts needed today and Peugeot dealers inform me that they now supply what they termed as a "repair" gasket ! bit obvious I thought - but its to do with the extra thickness needed he said... I told him it had been skimmed and so would need more than a 2 hole, prefff a 3,4, or 5 - but he said the "repair" gasket was designed for such a job - soooo, lets hope !
I'll let you know what happens! As I think I said before -- NOT looking foward to it !

There's a guy in the Citroën section selling a whole XM TD12 for £ 200, maybe he's got some bits you could use?
