Re: Computer operating systems
I'm going for an upgrade on one of my desktops on the strength of what you say Steve.. If it all goes to pot it doesn't really matter as everything I treasure is stored on the servers and in the cloud..

I don't know; hitting the Ann Summers catalogue might brighten up the day!

Re: Computer operating systems
Just restarted Firefox in safemode and the bug has gone.
Could be a glitch with one of the extensions.
There are some tweaks here, including a fix for Chromium.

Really? They called it that? Didn't they bother typing "rampant rabbit" into Google just to check first? ...CitroJim wrote:Just carried out a clean install of Rampant Rabbit .

I would perhaps recommend that the Canonical Dev team google their proposed names before using them in the future..Xac wrote:Jim, DO NOT Google Rampant Rabbit!

Absolutely, just me having a bit of fun on this otherwise dull Sunday... I'm not so sheltered that I don't know what a Rampant Rabbit is you knowmyglaren wrote:Jim was being facetious, it is "Raring Ringtail"
Find I can't upgrade directly to RR from PP and have had to upgrade to QQ first. That was very smooth and successful..
Now to go for RR

Re: Computer operating systems
Why didn't you just do a clean install from the DVD Jim?
The next one is "Saucy Salamander". See what you can twist that into

Job done. Now running Randy Ringtail on one PC...
One thing I do like about it is the improved cloud support accessed by the little cloud up on the status bar. I use the Ubuntu Cloud extensively...

Because I didn't want to loose all my settings such as my hosts, NFS configuration and my installed software and so on. I'm lazy...myglaren wrote:Why didn't you just do a clean install from the DVD Jim?

Re: Computer operating systems
I appreciate your reasoning there Jim, can be a bit of a pain reconfiguring everything.
The online upgrades are a doddle, aren't they?
Hadn't seen the cloud thingy and it is right next to the dropbox icon.
Was still using the file menu.
Been using is a lot as I have misplaced a photo. Can't find it on any of the computers, the cloud uploads or the unholy mess that is on the two external drives or the USB dongles. Keep chucking stuff on them with a promise to sort them out into some sort of order but never do.

Re: Computer operating systems
I'm liking Ubuntu 13.04. Somehow it seems a bit faster and seems to hang together a bit better than 12.04..
What did throw up a stark contrast today was returning to work and having to fight with Bill's finest
It's purgatory and makes my job unpleasant.
Give me Linux any day...
I was speaking to someone yesterday who just wants a PC as a tool with absolutely no bother or hassle attached to it. Person has finally lost all patience with the shenanigans of Windows and has defected to the Mac camp and bought an i something or another because they're said to just do as it says on the tin with no fuss or bother.
Can't blame anyone for that and it makes perfect sense...

Re: Computer operating systems
Thing with Mac is they make some ridiculous defaults. Scrolling down is actually what the rest of the world call scrolling up. Yes touch devices its "natural" but on a mouse is just strange.
Also it has a default of tab only moving between text fields, so you can't use the keyboard to fill out forms.
Both obviously can be changed in the settings.
I do see some things on Mac/Linux that are impressive every now and again, but I am still too stubborn to switch to a Linux variant, not to mention I'd miss two of my favourite programs, Postbox and PotPlayer. I don't think anything comes close to the gmail integration of postbox, aside from using the web interface. And I'm too keen on PotPlayer to try alternatives
Most other stuff I could do on Linux without too much hassle. Not sure how well the Linux version of Beyond Compare is though compared to the windows one.

Re: Computer operating systems
And 12.10 was slower and bloatier than 12.04 - yep, 13.04 is seeming nice so far. It's even fixed a bit of a persistent Unity sulk on one of the laptops, where the main icon bar and all window titles were AWOL. Made life difficult, that did...CitroJim wrote:I'm liking Ubuntu 13.04. Somehow it seems a bit faster and seems to hang together a bit better than 12.04.
Ben - What's postbox do with Gmail that you can't do with any other mail client via IMAP?
