It's annoyingly brittle, for a liquid... but for safety reasons I still reckon you can't beat glass!

Avoid the national, hugely-advertised chains and find a local chap, word of mouth or via a garage? About a thirdf to a half of the 'insurance price' normally.

Unless of course you're claiming on insurance, in which case best to use what they'd like you to use, and then watch the beggar doling it like a hawk... plastic clips get replaced by gobbits of black sealant, knives and scrapers get used to cut old sealant and scrape paint... you get the picture.

Most of the big chains seem to employ similarly high standards to the 'well known and loved' exhaust fitters you can't get quicker (thicker?!) than...

Find someone local. £150 if it's got auto wipers, £120 if it doesn't. And leave it at least 4hrs before you move the car.

Taffy

I have had it done twice. I paid around £160 each time couple of years ago, and they came out 1 hour into the sticks to do it. National Windscreens-they have a branch in Swindon. I think if you phone up the major players, they just make up a price they think they can get away with, as their first punt. If you can get the price as low as Eddie Nuff you will be doing well. They did forget to seal the scuttle to the new screen though but I wasn't standing over them when they did it. Suffice to say if your scuttle isnt sealed properly you'll get a soggy footwell!

also make sure when its done the plastic bit covering the wiper motor and air vent is stuck back down properly as i had mine off to clear the scuttle panel of leaves and didnt seal it back down and ended up with a flood in the footwell, as the rain runs straight under it and into the air vent for the heater

When I came to putting that plastic bit back, I used bathroom silicone sealant (mould resistant!) :p

About 1995 in the course of business with a local independent windscreen fitter we were discussing prices of windscreens and he told me that the most expensive screen he'd ever fitted was on an XM and it had cost about 300 quid to him.
This guy at the time was fitting mainstream bonded screens for me for less than 100quid.
Something's obviously happened to the market but I can't work out how or why.
