c5 2002 hdi tyres

Post by c52002 »

Hello everybody, first time I have posted here.
I have a c5 HDI 110hp saloon, I put new tyres on her about 7 months ago since then i have done about 20,000 miles, and the tyres are pretty much knackered ! Is this about right or are they wearing out too quickly ?
I drive really carefully, when on motorways I wouldn't be able to say if the car goes over 70 because I don't, I drive really carefully and keep off the accelerator.

cheers Kev.

Hi Kevin, I replaced a pair of Firestones on the front of my C5 in early Feb and they'd done about 18-19,000 miles and didn't have much more life left in them.... They where badly worn on the outside edges but even the central area only had about 2mm of tread remaking. I replaced the backs there in April fir the MOT and they'd done about 40,000 mikes and where Barums. ... Peter

The brand of tyre makes a fair difference here, Barum are ata the bottom of the pile, and will wear faster than a top brand such as Michelin.
I would think 20k miles is pretty decent from fronts on a large front wheel drive car. So long as they are evenly worn.
C5,s tend to wear the rears on the outer edges 1st.

Agree with Lighty. 20k on budget tyres isn't out of the ordinary. In my experience the rear tyres on mine do not last quite as long as I would have like, although the front's last longer than I would expect for such a heavy car. Sam

The real decider is have they worn evenly, if they have then the life is all down to the tyres or driving style, if they are worn on one edge the tracking needs adjustment.

I usually get around 25-30k from a pair of front tyres but I do drive exceedingly gently.

Its nothing to do with the price of the tyre, its the compound used that determines how long it lasts. A grippier sporty tyre will have a soft compound and will wear quicker (Toyo's on my 9-5 lasted 8k miles), a harder compound will give less grip but last a lot longer. Watch any F1 race and all you will hear about is tyre wear due to the compound used, the harder compound is slower but lasts longer, the soft compound quicker but wears prematurely.
All tyres now by law have to show their noise level, energy (read fuel efficiency) rating and wet weather grip, you can also look on the tyrewall for the compound rating, a tyre rated 200 will be very grippy but wear quickly, a 450 rating will take forever to wear but won't offer much grip, somewhere in between is what most manufacturers will opt for.

Hi guys, thank you for all of the replies.
I have just had the car into my friendly citroen mechanic and had the 4 lower wishbone bushes replaced. It cost me £175.00 all in but what a difference it has made to the way the car steers and generally handles, no more drifting from lane to lane.
I have also replaced the front tyres with a pair of Firestone's. I marked the mileage in my record book so I will see what i get from these tyres now that the car is driving in a straight line, and able to turn corners .

cheers Kev.
