Hi one of my neighbours has a problem with his 2000 xreg megane scenic i guess 1.9? it's dci diesel engine he had water pump fail/leak etc then it shredded aux belt he got it nearly home then it stopped and wouldn't start replaced water pump and belt etc but won't start now.unless theres a sensor round bottom crank pulley? he has a bigger problem with a bit on interference with valves and pistons getting ultra friendly kissy kissy dunk as asked him what happend he said it did seem like battery was a bit flat! to which i said sounds like the afore mentioned internals meeting plus some shredded aux belt behind cam belt pully plus did look at face of bottom pulley as a bit of the rubber between inner and outer layers of pulley had peeled off but just looked like just outer so shouldn't be a biiger problem or part of it!.
But reading around it sure sounds like an interference fit engine(most are now)
Now i take it that's an 8 valve engine? but are they inclined or upright and on followers or under cam like the old XUD engine types or like the 2.1 which has fingers and if meet up they break off so can save engines?
So at min a head off job! but do valves damage seats/pop them out or chew valve stems up?.
I did say whip covers off and check pinning up points for alingment so confirm etc if is or not belt jumped.
But theres many on here that will be fully conversant with that engines follies?

I would say remove the belt covers and the rocker cover. Time the engine up , and see if it turns by hand. If so, then check the valve clearances, this will show if the valves are bent, ie large gap = bent valve. I think the valves are straight up, so it may have even broken the camshaft or cam journals

Hi thanks for that. ive not spoke to him since so not sure what his wife has said as was going to see what was in the pot to fix it? it does turn over ok he just said it died on him then turned it over and it was like going flat so guess that would be valves hitting pistons or similar? the bits of belt are round casing behind crank shaft pully so guess it's gone across/through inside of belt which would make it move a few teeth round.
But main thing wondered if it was followers/fingers that snap off or cam damage.
Will give him a shout tomorrow to see how he got on.

Hi well we had a go! it has jumped teeth by the looks of it. we tried pegging crank by removing bolt and inserting a drill bit we moved it round with socket on pulley bolt got it to lockish but not 100% happy with positioning but can't get drill out as like bent round as goes back in but won't come out more than halfway but we didnt turn hard when lining up.plus looks like the lines on flywheel show in window.
But what hes trying to do is remove the sump then cut drill off with my multi tool if need be but one of the torx bolts heads stripped one over cross member or where cross member gets in the way so can't get much over it to sort.(mind you most of the car is in the way)
Going to get some of those Irwin bolt grip/remover tool and try that out.XXX fingers crossed very tightly!.lol
