Rear ram leaking - anyone have a spare?

Unread post by djadams »

Afternoon gents - after a hectic period of (mostly) trouble free activa motoring and home improvement I finally got underneath the old girl this morning (part of putting the summer wheels back on for the X-rally tomorrow!) and discovered the source of the offside rear leak that appeared when I swapped over to hydraflush - the dreaded ram. I'm not far off being ready to swap back to LHM, but I figure I should sort it sooner rather than later anyway.

It appears to be from the leak-off collar exactly as described in Jim's repair guide, so it should be possible to rebuild with Jim's ingenious XM rack gaiter mod. However - I was wondering if anyone out there in Activa-land had a spare known-good rear ram (or indeed a spare known-leaky ram that I could repair and then fit) so that I could dismantle and rebuild the car in one go without leaving it unusable while I repair the leak. I could then repair my original ram and keep that as a spare either for future misfortune or for the next person who needs one...

Of course if someone happens to have one to hand and is going the the X-rally, they may well find themselves with a willing buyer! :) I'll be in M1 YOX - a (slightly leaky) Silver S2 Activa... 8-)

Sorry, I don't have a ram to spare, but will be at XRally in my Activa, it's dark green, Emerald, with a funny little badge on the back, 'V6', so will say hello.

I look forward to meeting you, and indeed to poking around under the bonnet of your car! 8-)

I think mine's finally STOPPING leaking, following the extended winter we've had for the last few weeks. I may need to do a repair though - it's leaked a lot over the last couple of weeks (over a litre in total over the winter) and the drive is a mess. I checked the price of new ones a couple of weeks ago - £556!

Mine was just over two years old when it started weeping in winter, so Jim's repair is probably a better bet.

I'm sorry, I missed you completely at the X Rally Mr. Adams :( Normally I'd have had my Activa at the rally and it seemed very odd to me not to have a Xantia there to be honest. I seemed to spend my entire time among the XMs...

Hopefully I'll catch up with you at another rally... My Activa will be at the National and I hope to have both XM and Activa at the Little Horwood rallies...

It's a shame to have missed you Jim, would have been good to shake your hand after all the assistance you've given :)

Sadly I'm not expecting to make it to the National as the Activa and I are planning to be in la belle France that weekend, but I'd very much like to make it along to the DSM at Little Horwood as I still have a weakness for the DS that I like to indulge every now and then...

See you soon, I'm sure :-D

I'll be there at DSM and as it's local to me might even have all my cars there...

No mention of you V6 Xantia, Jim... That mean you're going to sacrifice it for the bits to engineer your Activa into a V6?

Gosh no, my V6 Xantia is too good to be a donor... It's just I can't see how to get three cars there yet...

I have to say the idea of a V6 Activa is growing on me very strongly. Three ES9 powered cars makes sense from a spares holding point of view.

That's one point, the other is that the ES9 is more economical then the TCT, has 25% more power and has a nicer noise!!

Tick, tick, tick!

Makes perfect sense!

@djadams
I've just listed an Activa rear subframe on ebay.
It's a bit rough/rusty but the ram was not leaking wet, just a bit damp/dusty look about it.
Might do you as a bench project to tidy up with Jim's leak return fix and a Fiesta steering rack bellows? Then transplant to your car?
I'm not looking for much for it, just wanted to to air it on here before weighing it in!
Where are you located?
