Non Biased Opinion's please

Post by citroenxm »

Innimemt replacement of the xantia has to come sooner or later other wise she will be on 300k and the fat man will be charging 250 quid a year road tax that I cannot afford and so on and so on.

Anyway this is not a political question its one for opinions and non biesed either please.

1. Renault Laguna 2 dci (must have new Turbo) in black. . Initiale spec ..
2. Citroen C5 facelift with C4 headlights. Exclusive 2.0,dw family in black

Specifying a Laguna with a new Turbo means I can double up the oil changes and try preserve the Turbo for longer as the service intervals were far to long and killed half of them. So I'm not worried about that. Window Winders are a real pita I also believe clutch master cylinders suffer a fault where the pedal stays down. A replacement fixes that. Done this on a car already and is not hard at all.. the Laguna is also a good old 8v engine too. .

C5 two as citroen called them. Are they REALLY better car then the early car? Am I gonna get calliper issues, hand brake cable issues, door handle issues, or are they really sorted? I know the 2.0 is the dw. Engine family which in the xantia is the best thing since bread ever but what's the 16v head like? anything like the early 2.2 disaster? Do these 2.0 16v have Eolys fluids to top up?

So which do I try then? ??

I'm going to be selling my 2002 C5 2.0 HDI soon I bought a later one that had a few problems, now all sorted so I can pass on the earlier one.

The one I'm selling is a hatchback, everything works, quite a bit of service history in the folder, new clutch last October, new handbrake cables in January, new tyres all round done about 3k miles, 166k miles on the clock, MOT until July and tax until end of June
A nice clean car with hardly any blemishes. If you or anyone else is interest PM me and I'll give you more details. Car is located at GL15 6LE 13 miles from the Severn Bridge.

Offers invited but it will probably be on Ebay if need be.

Thanks gibbo but an early car is a BIG no no for me... the later one is only just being considered. ..

Good luck with your sale. .

I would go for the laguna 2 over the C5 , our lag 2 was the best allround car we have had , yes they have their problems but doesn't most new stuff , the initiale is a great model too . Ours would return mid 40's mpg in town . My wife had this at the same time as I had a C5 mk1 2.0hdi and then a 2.2hdi , I personally prefered the laguna as it was quicker more economical and handled pretty good too , we've now got a laguna 3 which is a great car with the 175bhp 2.0dci , go on Paul get the Renault you will certainly feel at home in it after the xantia.

I would question the cost benefit of change; every used car comes with a bunch of stuff the owner never got to fixing.

My personal recommendation for you, would be an Alfa 159 in black, or if the budget's too thin a 156.

Noo urgghh i don't like Alfa at all not even the styling. . Never have done addo thanks. .

I certainly won't touch the 2.2 dci Laguna they seem as bad as Psa's 2.2 engine. .

You know you are not going to get an unbiased view from me Paul but from what I have read and experienced the later C5 seems to be more difficult to work on than the earlier one, so far I have not had anything I couldn't fix on mine (apart from the rear suspension at the moment) and have generally found it easier to work on than the XM, the 2.0. has quite a lot of room in the engine bay. My present one has done nearly 190k and still drives beautifully and both of them sailed through the MOT. I'm sure you know to avoid the 2.2 though.

I DO NOT want the early car. . I really don't like them..

I have worked on a two litre HDi c5 and yes there's room but being my own car other then routine servicing I've no time for constant niggles all the time like the one i was involved with. ..

Hence my Q .. later mark two c5 or Laguna... so far we like the Laguna...

Either you have been unlucky Paul or I have been lucky, I have had no niggles, once I have put right the faults I bought the cars with I had no further problems, they are that cheap now that if something serious goes wrong you can afford to throw them away and but another - like XMs were a few years ago.

What's the reason behind the £250 tax? for reaching 300K? It seems to me like the Xantia is more economical and has less CO2 emissions than the other two so a bit baffled by the extra tax. And would imagine it would take a few years to recoup the extra cost of switching?

Our road taxing in the uk is more government theft. . Its already 220 uk pounds a year to tax a xantia.. but any car after 2001 is taxed on the emmsions. . This means the Laguna and c5 are both in diesel form cheaper to tax then the xantia..
