i think your dealer is wrong on the two part No.'s, " 5271E2 5271E5 " as here is what is listed on service citroen,
which is what cit dealers look parts up on

2
5271 C0
NFP

HYD SUSPENSION SPHERE BRACKET
LEFT
- EXCEPT POWER STEERING
+ 5271 92 (01)

5271 E1
LEFT
- POWER STEERING AND WITHOUT HYDRACTIVE SUSPENSION
+ 5271 92 (01) TO O 7244

5271 E2
LEFT
- POWER STEERING AND HYDRACTIVE SUSPENSION
+ 5271 92 (01) TO O 7244

5271 C1
NFP
RIGHT
- EXCEPT POWER STEERING
+ 5271 92 (01)

5271 E4

5271 E5
RIGHT
- POWER STEERING AND HYDRACTIVE SUSPENSION

only two of this list state NFP but not the two you mention

Taffy, if I encountered something I thought was a problem I would update everybody I knew who could be affected. If it turned out it wasn't a problem, great, otherwise people can deal with it.

Re: please help! Strut Tops. Haynes

Post by Old-Guy »

Although I know in theory exactly how to do it, I haven't yet done the job - waiting for anew strut mount to come from France. Making a check list, I had one small query, so late last night I had a look at the BoL (Haynes Xantia 1993-98 Service and Repair). I couldn't make sense of it (nor did it even refer to my issue), so went to bed. This morning, I re-read it carefully - it wasn't tiredness, the BoL does not make sense, it tells you to drain the "the suspension sphere hydraulic unit" via the "hydraulic pressure regulator bleed screw" (NO NEVER) and later "Lift the assembly [strut attached to mount] up and withdraw it through the engine compartment" - why would you do that even if it was physically possible?

So for the benefit of anyone else PLEASE IGNORE THE BoL on changing strut mounts. As this has become a job that will have to be done on every Xantia that is to survive, I will write a comprehensive set of instructions once I've actually done the job (unlike Haynes) and post it for the experts to pick to pieces - unless of course someone else has written one and I just can't find it! :(

Please could an authority (Jim?) solve my niggling doubt: On reassembly, does the port in the strut shaft have to be kept aligned with the sphere port in the strut mount, or is there an annular groove in the mount taper to maintain feed?

the BOL might be referring to a car that has had sever strut top failure, then you might be able to pull the strut up through into the engine bay   :-D

the ole in the strut top is a tapper, you must put insulation tape around the thread of the strut to stop the thread damaging the O rings in the strut top neck

Yes, no need worry about orientation

Thank you Malcolm and Martin. I was planning on tying a noose a noose in thin cord to pull the strut shaft up, but didn't think about protecting the seals from damage by the threads. At least I don't need to worry about orientation!

I thought it happened automatically.

The irony is that there were three advisories on the MoT: both front brake hose showing slight signs of degradation (same as last year!) and "Slight corrosion starting by offside front sphere mounting underbonnet." In fairness, the dire state of the Strut Mount flange was probably hidden in the muck under the wing. Before I started doing the head gasket, I pressure-washed the whole car, paying particular attention to under the O/S/F wing knowing I would have to take off the inner liner and fiddle around under there. In my enthusiasm I probably dislodged the flaking remains of the mounting's flange!

Personal Update

The new (right-hand) mount finally arrived and was fitted more than a week ago. Fairly straight-forward job with the helpful tips from forum members (thanks gentlemen), but I discovered a few more things the hard way. The strut shaft was good-and-tight in the taper - after whacking it as hard as I dared with a 4lb hammer several times, I cautiously 'bumped' (dropped from a height of 2-3 inches) it with a 14lb sledge-hammer - it dropped straight out.

One week and 150 miles later, no sign of any leaks - job's a good 'un.

The new mount looks (bits of slight rust despite being in an anti-rust bag) as though it's been in store several years - I'd say stock is running out. :(
