205 Cutting out in rain problem!

Hi..
Peugeot 205 1.0 Carb 1991 cut out in the rain whilst driving this morning, got towed home green flag started it up using a portable starter, the guy said the battery was "broken" (helpful) and it needs checking at a garage (£35.00? seems a bit steep) when it cut out all the elctrics flickered & the hazards were weak, the wipers barely moved. & the CD kept ejecting itself over & over.. any ideas on where to start looking? I'd thought of alternaotr driev belt but aparently not[:0]

Dodgey earth lead on the battery,or main body earth lead?

Turns out the battery had actually "died" not bad for an 18 month old battery...
Aplogies to the Green flag man for doubting his obvious genius.. Although 35 quid for a battery "test" still seems high when the replacement battery was £38.99[}:)]
