I have a 406 thats overheating, the cooling fans are not working. I have changed the brown thermostat, and the fuses are all ok. i have removed the panel between the fans to reveal the three relays how can i test these and what is the third one for? do both the fans run at the same time? if you could help i would be very greatful

Hi
Click on the link below, Then on "Engines" at the top & then on " 306 cooling fans basic principals of operation " in the list that appears on the left hand side.
The system is the same as whats fitted to your 406

Do the cooling fans run if the aircon is switched on?
If the brown 2 pin plug is dissconeted next to the thermostat & the ignition switched on do the fans run now?
Yes both fans should run together, They have 2 speeds, slow then fast but they should ALWAYS run together!

Hi,
Snap just encountered 10/8 the same problem on my 96 "406 GLX" Saloon.
Thanks for the info on the Web site.
I'm off to check my fuses.
Please let us know if you have any success fixing the fault.
How will the fans run with the brown 2 pin plug disconnected do you need to short out the connections?
Handy Andy

This could be the type of problem I had with my 405 and posted the results of same last year (Sorry can’t remember the date)
The upshot of my investigations was that the small plastic bags that cover the relays don’t always keep out the water and the result is that the relay contacts (and their sockets) corrode. One of my relays was so bad I had to break it off. I replaced two of the relays (£1 from breaker £10 from pug) and wrapped them in cling film. This cured the fault and gave me no further problems.
