Today drove 2 406 2.0 hdi 110 both gtx 2002, In mint condition,
Were total crap when compared to c5, felt poor quality to drive

Decent engines, but cars not good at all, lol..

I thought they would have driven ok. The 607 was a contender when looking for a car a couple years ago, C5 won as it had Xexons and colour coded exterior trim oh and better suspension.

Pugs have , at least to me, always felt low-rent in comparison to Citroen. Comparing my mate's old 405 to my Xantia of the same year, M reg, the Xantia was far better put together. His Pug seemingly shed bits as you drove along, whereas nothing ever broke on my Xantia until I drove it backwards through a dry stone wall at speed and fell 6ft into a field. Even then it still drove away..

Agree about the 405 vs Xantia, my mum had a 405GR for a while - very zippy and nice tight handling but rode like a box of bricks and felt cheap, noisy and very unrefined... but remember the 405 is a generation older than the Xantia, the 406 is the equivalent generation to the Xantia even though it came out a few years later. 405 is the same generation as the BX and it shows...

I'm comparing my 306 hdi est to a C5 hdi est.....C5 seems better built, handling wise though, it's a fkn boat compared the 306, but it's bigger/heavier

Indeed, the 406 shares the same platform as the Xantia, the fundamental difference being the suspension. The rear suspension on a 406 is fairly complicated with a lot of rubber components that wear with age. A well sorted 406 is a capable car. However most are getting on now and could do with new bushes, and most people don't bother with proper 4 wheel alignment which they really need. My 185k'er with all new suspension is still a more capable car than a lot of modern vehicles. On the plus side for the 406, suspension parts cost peanuts and are readily available. I gather this is often not the case with the Xantia, judging by a lot of owner posts

It depends what you want from the car, I have two C5 estates at the moment and a 2001 406 Hdi GLX estate and although without doubt the ride is far superior on the C5 I find that the 406 handles better than either of them, the steering is much more sharp and positive, the visibility is better and it feels somehow 'safer' to drive, the seats are also very comfortable, well the GLX electric ones anyway, and its quiet, mine has done 211,000 miles and still feels good.

In a nutshell, for space and ride comfort the C5 is best, for confident handling I prefer the 406. I like both of them.

I could agree the comments Peter for my 306....when I'm the C5, it's nice too but then I miss the taught/stiffer suspension, sharper steering ect ect, to me the 306 is more go-cart like.....I honestly dont know what the hell I would keep.

Well...if there was one part of the C5 that would happily make me get rid of because of.....it's the front, it's bloody hellish!, whoever designed it and the lights needed sacked, it's most horrible front of a car I think I've ever saw (where's the puke smilley when you need it)

Argument for the sake of it really, 406 was probably the last really solid car Pug made, 407 &C5 are the same car besides suspension. I would say there is zero difference in build quality, and would say I was qualified to comment

love bx,never had any problems with them,cx even better,but not on fuel,lol.
