Re: DMF's , Why just why !!!
Is this for your Fiat Mark?
They are stupid prices, I think my C5s one cost £300, plus the actual clutch, fitting, etc etc. I could have bought a car or two for the total job. I really wouldnt have minded too much if it had done 100K, but at 25K I was more than a little annoyed with it.
Insane, hence my Xantia has neither DMF nor FAP. Cars survived just fine for years and years without all of these acronyms!

I quite agree and I'll have to admit it puts me off a newer PSA vehicle (yes I'm aware other marques are at it as well)Citroenmad wrote:Cars survived just fine for years and years without all of these acronyms!

Re: DMF's , Why just why !!!
No the fiats fine Chris , I was just seeing how much the prices were for Dmf cars to the older non Dmf stuff , it's quite a difference . The laguna III looks a pricey undertaking if that was to need replacing . As you know I've got a soft spot for the Alfa Romeo 159 so I thought I would get a price from a specialist for a clutch & flywheel replacement , the price is around £1000 for the 1.9Jtd 16v engine , the specialist said to watch the dmf's at around 80k as they had done a few at this sort of mileage . So unless I come across one with this job done I doubt I'll be having a 159 .

How much of that is labour Mark?bxzx16v wrote:the price is around £1000 for the 1.9Jtd 16v engine
Clutches on some moderns can be a fiendish job... We think an Activa is quite tricky but it's child's play compared to some...
I'd expect a Mazda RX-8 to be at least that because of the massive aggro factor and I expect the 159 would be similar...

They are pretty pircey!
I was put off getting a diesel 75 as the clutch change on those can be up to £1200!
I wonder if its all in the scheme to make a car an ever more throw away comodity.

Re: DMF's , Why just why !!!
Eurocar parts have a valeo clutch for £181 & the flywheel is £382 , I would seriously consider letting the Zx & doblo go for a 159 but with that price for the clutch I somehow don't think so . I don't think a clutch for the Zx16v would be much more than £350 fitted ? I'm still on the original at 124k as the car has not been thrashed to within an inch of it's life . My mechanic mate used to work at a Citroen dealer & then a specialist and says some jobs on a Zx16v are a pain in the arse , looking through the history with the car it's never wanted anything other than regular servicing in it's 18yrs , the previous owner liked the car that much she wouldn't even let it go in the scrappage scheme , and traded it in a year later for guess what Jim ? A Peugeot 207 of all things and she's also got a Mazda Rx8 .

Re: DMF's , Why just why !!!
I note with interest the Lithuanian chap who does the XM and Xantia strut tops also repairs DMFs, very cheaply..

Re: DMF's , Why just why !!!
Having picked up a C5 DMF, I can imagine postage being quite substantial. However, if it is cheap and the repair lasts as long if not longer than a replacement, then that might be good. I'd rather avoid having them in a car, but that itself is unavoidable.
Surprisingly my petrol Rover 75 has a DMF, lucily they rarely fail on those. I have no idea why a petrol should but it is not just diesels which have these failures waiting to happen.

I know why. It's a fur-lined ocean-going ball-ache of a job involving the removal of subframes and other allied silliness...Citroenmad wrote: I was put off getting a diesel 75 as the clutch change on those can be up to £1200!
Mark, stick with the ZX. A clutch in one of those is a doddle by comparison...
It's all very well KingAS doing DPF refurbishes but how much the carriage to Lithuania and back?
