I heard about this and thought it was a joke....
Immediate silly question: why not simply turn off the ignition?
Or was it one of those poxy keyless jobs that won't let you shut down the engine whilst it's moving?

Indeed, keyless ignition and no stop function.
Same thing happened with a Vel Satis a few years ago, car only stopped when it crashed into the barrier on the French-Italian border.

Sounds like it was an auto too, with a dial for speed (like cruise control I guess) that had got stuck before and Renaul mechanics assured him was fixed.
