So what have manufacturers used to secure the rear view mirror in the factory?

I have seen sticky pads used for this purpose.

You can also get special glue with the same coefficient of expansion as glass for this very task...

Loctite do a kit which uses a fine mesh pad which activates the adhesive and works very well. I imagine the manufacturers use something similar.
DO NOT STICK ANYTHING TO GLASS WITH SUPERGLUE.

in my experience the repair im talking about the super glue does not come into contact with the glass, but just to the original bonding for the heated screen terminal,

i certainly would not super glue a rear view mirror back in place, as there is a lot of leverage going through the mirror to its mounting point when adjusting it
