Oh definitely, my in laws know we've arrived by the sound of the car rather than us pulling up on the drive.
It confuses them when I turn up in the Activa and they can't hear it.

But I assume your inlaws are expecting and looking forward to your arrival, thus listening out for the sound of your car which I assume they have seen/heard/been in many times before.

They don't know what time we're actually arriving so would have to be listening out constantly for what could be several hours if that were the case.
I've had several people say they knew I had arrived because of the sound of the 1.9TD, or they had thought it was me because someone else with one had pulled up or driven by.

You mean the sound of 90W gear oil dripping from the pinion seal, or the crossply tyres going sideways as it accidentally drifts after hitting a manhole cover at 5MPH?

You slander a very good car addo, far superior to a lot of the s**t around at the time. I sold a 13,000 mile one to my brother he ran it up to 205,000 miles, maintained it himself, it never saw the inside of a trade garage.
When he emigrated he had half his money back off a neighbour who couldn't wait to get hold of it.

Have I missed something?

I am normally very thorough. Can't see anywhere where OP states it is a 1.9TD but I do agree with you Xac. They are distinctive!

On the subject of cars making characteristic noises, I was once sitting outside the local hospital waiting for my wife to pick me up in the Mini she was then driving. I got chatting to a local Policeman and he was astonished when I said ' here she comes' and sure enough two minutes later there she was. How on earth could you tell it was her? He asked. Bendix I replied. I don't think he was any the wiser.
It was stuck or loose and made a very distinctive sound.
Kind regards

Very amusing thread. The original poster has either done a runner after realising he was "found out", or has left in disgust after being accused of being a thief in training when posing a genuine question.

So is the V6 Xantia. My girlfriend can tell when I'm arriving home from a 2nd floor apartment with the windows closed despite the car park housing around 30 cars of various types. There is a certain low thrum to the exhaust that most other cars don't have. (ok maybe the muffler is getting a bit tired. )

Another car that is distinctive and hard to miss is the GS with its air cooled flat 4 and odd exhaust beat... no chance of confusing that with anything else, I could always recognise the sound of one coming around the corner well before it was visible. :)

Alot of people join forums to find out things like me,just because he hasn't replied doesn't mean he is a bad lad,I have joined forums in the past and simply forgot which or what forum i posted on and have forgotten to bookmark the page etc,And i think Xantia's aint what you call a car i think would be chosen by thieves.Maybe a joyrider got lucky or the poor f**cker who had his car stolen actually gave his code to someone he trusted and forgot he had told them it,or maybe he took it to a dodgy garage for a repair and had to give the code to them and they gave it to someone else..The possibilities are endless lol.

I think caution especially with new members regarding these kind of details is warranted. The new member should not be offended as the information they are indirectly asking about is not really for public consumption.

@DickieG, I had sort of heard of it I'll be honest but only on the very first keypad models due to a potential 'concern' to put it one way. Anyway if I said 'shuffle or tweak' (I won't post what) that may ring a bell if the method you know about is what I was thinking of.

Nope, the method I refer to applies to my VSX which has the later keypad and is towards the end of S1 production, don't now what all this shuffle and tweak is about, sounds like it involves effort so not what I'm talking about.

I'd rather not go into specifics, although that was a crude way of putting it. Lets just say no tools and 10 seconds max.
