S1 v S2 Xantia

S1 v S2 Xantia
Looking around this forum, it just seems that people rate the S1 Xantia higher than an S2. TD versions only. The HDi which came with the S2 is a different animal altogether. I actually bought a 110HDi but took it back after 2 days when engine management and other warning lights light up the dashboard like a Xmas tree. That pulled like a train, brilliant.
I have seen some cars sold on here that I wouldn't have looked at twice(S1), and yet have struggled to sell a good S2. Not sure why.
I know they hung a lot of useless electrical garbage on the S2, but it was always better than the other S1's TD's I have had, and that includes a 2litre 16v 135bhp S1.
Just wondering !

Hold on Xac... There's a lot more than that!!!Xac wrote:S1, better looking. End of. Thread closed
I have an S1 and an S2 and there's only one feature on an S2 worth having and that's the automatic wipers. Bar that, it's the S1 all the way for me.
Same with all Citroen models...

The HDi is the best diesel engine fitted to any Xantia and for that you must have an S2. If you want a petrol then it must be an S1 .... Simples

And another thing about an S2. Where the horn push is
I'm sure if you ran an S2 all the time it's OK but when you have two others with the horn on the indicator stalk means you can never find the horn when you most need it in an S2

Apart from the radiator grille area, the outside of the car is identical. As is the interior.(SX) So whats the big love affair with an S1.?? I personally prefer the grille of the S2. Only thing I don't like about an S2 1.9 TD, is as said in first post, all the unnecessary electrical junk they put on the engine, but then I always cast doubt on designers parentage. A matter of personal taste in the two designs, it's just that I don't like yours, lol. .

Re: S1 v S2 Xantia
14 years ago when the S2 appeared I thought it was a good looking car and when we first started getting them here for servicing, I thought they were a big improvement on the S2. A slightly more modern dash, and overall slight tweaks to bring it a little more up to date, clear rear lights, new design wheels, a later front and general modernisation. I don't mind, i like both S1 and S2 in Xantias and also in XMs too.

Fat bumpers which ruin the car's sleek looks.Gregg1100 wrote:Apart from the radiator grille area, the outside of the car is identical. Worse headlights with no sections for putting nuts and bolts.
Interior of a S2 is very different.
Loss of the grab rail and shelf, OK a marginally larger glove box (you can now fit both gloves in it), but you've got awkward door pockets with built in handles.
Did the S2 hatch lose the centre rear seat belt?
Horn in the wrong place.
Rear heated window switch in a bizarre place!
I find the S2 steering wheel radio controls too easy to knock.
S1 has the easy to disable immobiliser, not sure how you'd disable it on a S2 1.9TD
S1 has IR plips which you can actually tell if they're working using a digital camera such as on most phones and is easy to program with the car.

Re: S1 v S2 Xantia
I'm not all that fussed really but do prefer the S1 for some of the little things mentioned by Xac. My S1 is one of the last so it's packed with near enough the same amount of electronics as the S2's.
What's this about seat belts? Does the S2 only carry 4 passengers?!

Yes kev, only 4 passengers in every Xantia ...
Surely the three point central rear seat belt on the S2 is a good idea, those lap belts are awful things.
I do find the steering wheel controls on the S2 worse than on the S1, they are very easy to knock.

Ah phew, that makes much more sense!
I think three point belts are an excellent idea.

The S2 hatch has a static lap belt for the middle rear passenger whereas the S1 has an inertia reel lap belt. A very retrograde step.
The Estates have a three-point inertia reel for the middle passenger on both S1 and S2.
Fundamentally the S2 is a fine car of course, I just prefer the looks, seats and dash layout of the S1. Most of the S2 changes are cosmetic anyway and those that aren't are mainly electrical.
Truth is Greg, electrical complexity between the late S1s and S2s are much the same anyway, especially on the high-spec cars. The big game-changer is the CPH on all S2 cars but generally they're as reliable as the day is long and if they do play up the Lexia will go deeply into them to help fix it, especially the alarm and locking.
And the HDi is a very fine engine and very reliable. ECU faults are almost unknown and they will run to very high mileages with no problems. Engine Management Lights, when diagnosed with a Lexia are, by and large, easy to fix and often vacuum related.

Re: S1 v S2 Xantia
Oh, and another thing!
The S2 is terrible for rotting out the PAS supply pipe between the pump and pinion valve. It's a devil of a job to sort and new pipes are NFP.
On an S1 this problem is almost unknown. Against that, S2 strut tops seem to last better. Swings and roundabouts...

Ah, I didn't know that, I was going by my estate which has the three point. That is a bit of a poor idea, the inertia reel lap on the S1 is how lap belts should be, otherwise they are left flapping around on the seat ..
