Because when a car is declared scrapped these days that's it to all intents and purposes. End of. It no longer exists in the eyes of the DVLA.

I believe it is possible to retrieve a car and have it de-scrapped legally in some very exceptional circumstances but it's a heck of a lot of bother and fuss. It's certainly not encouraged anyway.

Some scrappers cannot ever be recovered legally. That applies to Cat A and Cat B write-offs and any car that's been on fire.

I don't know. I thought stolen cars that were not reclaimed by their owners were auctioned off to pay for copper's tea and biscuits...

I believe some cars are crushed by the coppers as punishment if they were obtained by the criminals through their ill-gotten gains or something like that. In such a circumstance I don't believe there is a category as such.

one of my local breakers yards always has a few cars just outside the yard that he sells on that he has got in to break but not put the paper work through yet actually seen one with tax and test and in good nick he got as someone had passed away and on one in the family wanted it as it was about 8 years old so too old 2 owner would have been tempted if i hadn't just bought a car :(

This story made me quite angry recently http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.c ... =8#1662851" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've seen the car around and it was like new, which means it must have been VERY well looked after. A proper period piece too, with these horrible carpets. It's been baled now though. :(

As to the original question... The rules for irreversable deregistration on scrapping were introduced to prevent vehicle ID cloning and cut-and-shut "restorations".

That is very sad :( It does look very clean and tidy, you would have thought it would have sold for more that £140 and been kept on the road? Some people have some funny ideas.
