Spare wheel needed to borrow near Reading..

Unread post by Northern_Mike »

Hi all,

does anyone have a Xantia wheel with a road legal tyre on it near Reading that I could borrow for an hour? I'm convinced that the vibration on my car is caused by the rear wheels, but I need two to prove this.

I swapped the drivers side rear wheel for the spare, this made no difference. I swapped the passenger side for the spare, it made a considerable difference, but the wobble is still there. Obviously I only have one spare. I really want to try it with two wheels on that are not mine and see what happens. I don't really want to go to the expense of buying a scrap wheel, making sure there is a road legal tyre on it, then finding out it's not the cause after all..

Help!

Cheers
MIke

Sounds like a plan Mike, though swapping them front to back would probably change the situation for a steering wobble, if it were the rear wheels.

Just make sure the borrowed wheels are tired and tested

The spare wheel on that car is probably out-of round, I had to use it coming back from France 18 months ago, and it caused noticeable vibration.

While I owned both that car and my current car, I swapped the front wheels from my current car with the rear wheels on that one, to make a set of 4 reasonably good alloys on the car that I was keeping. So the rear wheels you have are not the pair that was on the car when I was plagued with the vibration.
The vibration did not really change with a set of new tyres, it did improve with a new(ish) upper engine mount (the horizontal donut), but got gradually worse again after a few 10,000s of miles.

The vibration lessened when I used the spare on the N/S/R today.

Sounds like I might have been sold a pup that some people knew had a fault, but didn't have the courtesy to warn me about before I bought it.

You've got me worried there Mike

I didn't even consider it a fault, slightly annoying yes but I assumed its just a wheel/tyre.

Hello Mike,

If you are still looking to borrow a spare wheel I'm in Wokingham, tyre size is the same, mine's an estate as per signature.

Could do Tues, Wed, Thur or Fri.

PM me if I can be of help.

Hi Ted,

That would be great. What time on Tuesday? I'm off tomorrow, so ideal.

All the best,

Mike

Thanks to the very nice chap Ted, we discovered two things today - the vibration went away when two different wheels were fitted on the back.

BOTH, not just one, of the new-looking Pirelli P6000s have bulges on them. No wonder it was vibrating..

Well. Sort of. £160 quid for tyres the same spec isn't exactly "Excellent news" Jim..
