Xantia diesel leak! Hopefully fixed!

Had an issue on the way to work this morning

The car was 'flat' and not very smooth. Was thinking an air leak and when I got the bonnet up it was leaking diesel from the throttle spindle on the pump.

The car is a 1994 (L) Xantia 1.9d non turbo with the Lucas pump.

Has anyone replaced the seals in this area before? A local firm my Father rang today said they can do it, but I'd much rather do it myself as previous experience has taught me that others charge lots of money and usually don't do a great job

Well thanks to the t'internet i've found that there are two o ring seals on the throttle shaft. I can buy a pair on ebay for £12 posted. Haven't checked my Citroen dealer to see if they are available there yet.

The ebay ad says they are 10mm od seals so I might have some anyway in my metric selection box

Now, does anyone have or know where I can get the workshop manual for the Lucas cav dpc type pump to help me remove the pump top cover and replace the seals?

which pump has your car got, if its a Lucas pump you will also require the lid because when the O rings fail the spindle damages the lid,,

the ebay price is extortionate as the seals are about 60p each,

the other thing that can cause fuel to leak here is if the one way valve's in the fuel feed and return banjo connection's to the pump are sticking,

Be careful that any 'odd' seals that you use are diesel-proof.

Well did the job today. No sign of any damage to the lid the seals were stilll there just worn I guess. The car started perfectly without needing bled and seems to run well although I haven't driven it yet.

Yes I do hope the seals are 'diesel proof'. I'm going to get a set of four correct seals and keep them handy just in case

Whilst I was there I did the stop shaft seals too just in case. These were hard and broke when I removed them although this shaft wasn't leaking.

Next on the agenda is the waxstat. I don't think this has worked properly in the 2+ years I've had the car although it always starts whatever the weather

Drove it tonight. It drove fine and afterwards I left it running and checked the pump. No leaks

I'm not disbelieving you Malcolm as I'm sure if the problem is allowed to continue for ages the lid will wear but I've done a few now and never yet felt the need to replace a lid... All caught in quick time though...

Yes mine was caught quickly too, leaking one day and fixed the next, only did a couple of miles whilst leaking.

Does anybody know the part number for the seals, my local Citroen dealer doesn't seem to have much idea

citroen wont know as its a Lucas pump they don't show an exploded drawing of the pump,

i have a Delphi packet at my workshop i will get you that part No. tomorow

To drag up the past sorry!!!
This is happening to mine now, also a 1.9d from 1994 on L reg. Diesel is seeping through the shaft on the top right of the pump.
I've not yet heard back from two of my mechanics so might end up attempting this myself on the road!

How difficult is it in reality and what part(s) do I need?

It's not difficult and can be done in-situ with great care.

You will need a pukka seal kit for your Lucas pump and that can be bought from any good diesel specialist. You MUST advise the exact pump type and the type number (Starts with DPC) can be found on a blue plate on the underside of the pump body.

The ebay seal is the drive shaft seal and NOT the one you need.

Once you have the seals, clean the pump up until it is absolutely spotless and clean the surrounding the same. Remove the throttle and cold-start levers and all other gubbins from the top lid of the pump. Undo the four lid screws and carefully lift the lid whist pressing down on the throttle spindle. That stays put but the cold start lever will come up with the lid.

Replace the O rings on the throttle shaft, being very careful not to loose the old ones in the bowels of the pump. Replace the seals on the cold start lever noting the orientation oft he cold start cam under the lid.
Replace the big lid gasket and reassemble.

Job done.

Be so very careful no foreign matter gets in the pump at all whilst the lid is off and this is the reason for the clinical cleanliness.

Any foreign items and dirt that do get in will mean the pump having to be removed for a full strip and clean. That is no fun at all but with care that won't be necessary,
