807 AL4 auto gearbox problem

Post by robert terry »

Having trouble with my 807 AL4 g/box and wondering if anyone knows of a common problem causing forward drive not to engage immediately. It takes a few revs to take up the drive. Once the drive has been taken up it stays engaged OK as long as I don't take it out of gear. Reverse works fine. Hoping somebody can help, Regards, Robert

There's a few known problems on these 'boxes Robert and the big suspect with this would be the valve block and specifically the brake band F3 that engages 1st and second gear. The gears are engaged via electrovalves controlling hydraulic pressure to servos and these valves do partially fail especially those that regulate the hydraulic pressure inside the gearbox.

A search of this forum should reveal many more threads on common AL4 faults, Particularly those afflicting the valve block and electrovalves. If you can't find then post in the Citroen forum as this gets slightly more exposure.

Before any of that though, an oil change is a must to rule it out. I can supply details of how to do it but ideally you do need a Peuegot diagnostic kit to reset the worn oil counter and to ensure the gearbox is at the right temperature when checking the level. Please be aware that these 'boxes must only be refilled with Esso/Mobil LT71141 ATF and absolutely nothing else. It has no equivalent. The correct ATF can be obtained from your local Peugeot Dealer under Part. No. 9736.22

Thanks for your reply Jim and I will search the forums for more info I have looked at them quite a lot but havn't seen my specific problem there so I though I would post to find if there was a common fault for it. I have wanted to change the fluid as Peugeot told me it has the wrong type in and this weekend I have attempted to do it. The service manager explained that the torque converter would need to be emptied as much as possible. He said to run the engine after draining the main box although he didn't go into detail. My concern now is that when I removed the drain plug, about a litre or so came out suggesting it was overfilled. I found the plastic level tube inside the plug hole (it's not the two part plug system, 27mm and 19mm??) and drained the rest, ran the engine and got a bit more out but only managed to get about 3 litres or a shade more. When I filled it up I could only get about 2 litres back in. I made sure the car was level and that it was warmed up before the final check. the level tube is about 50-60mm long and looks OK to me but I don't think there is enough oil in there because I think there should be 3 litres in the transmission part. The gearbox still has it's problem. Because I may have to flush the box a couple of times I bought Smith and Allens' (a specialist oil blending company) 71141 ATF as it's cheaper. Perhaps not the best move but I wonder if anyone else has come across this company before.
I have bought Diagbox and PP2000 but not sure if they are working. PP 2000 needs activating online and is asking for a code. Is that the code that Keygen comes up with at the beginning of the installation.
I'll stop now as I will be on all night about me this car and all our problems.
Regards, Robert.

No worries Robert :-D Always happy to help...

That was excruciatingly bad advice your dealer gave about running the engine with the gearbox drained to try and get some more out. It can result in all kinds of issues.

You seem a bit unsure about the oil change procedure. If you PM me your email address I'll send you the full (Citroen) official guide plus some useful notes but it'll be the same for yours. Be aware that the level can only be checked at a specific temperature and with the engine running and 'box in P.

I've never heard of your brand of LT71141 but be careful as some generic ATFs say they are compatible with LT71141 but do not meet the full specification. To be safe, I'd only ever use genuine Esso/Mobil LT71141 which is light amber in colour and smells of toast and cats. If what is offered does not meet these two tests then it's not right, especially if it is red! It is a good idea to do a couple of changes in quick succession and you will never get the full amount out as it is impossible to drain the torque converter.

When you say the gearbox had the wrong oil in it was it red? If so that suggests Dexron and definitely the wrong stuff.

Once your PP2000 is up and running then you'll be able to do loads of checks. To help you with the PP2000 look in the Citroen forum for a sticky topic all about Lexias. The last few pages might be very relevant.

Here's another useful thread about doing some Lexia Diagnostics on an AL4. The meat is on page 2.

The PP2000 will give very similar output to the Lexia.

Hope that helps Robert.

Hi Jim, Without a doubt your info will be a great help and yes it seems I have forgotten the oil change procedure I read on the forums :? . I'll PM my mail address and will be grateful for your info. The oil in the g/box was red and smelled like mothballs (not sure if you remember that smell). The oil I have bought is synthetic and is also red but I can't describe the smell so I will use the Mobil LT 71141 in subsequent changes and do the level with engine running and in Park.
Regards, Robert.
