Captain Slows Activa Rescue Thread

Unread post by Captain Slow »

Once again I am an Activa owner!

My day started in a civic, followed by a blast up to motorway to Dunstable in a saxo vts with my best mate kitch as his bx was broken.

Image

We arrived at the worst car lot in the world full of utter crap, including this lambo....

Image

To find this very tired, unloved xantia Activa. I felt sorry for it :(

Image

The stop light was on constantly, the bodywork was in bits and the brake lights didn't work. The guy was on his own and wasn't overly keen on getting it out unless I was really interested at the price, shown as £499.

I really should have walked away, but we fitted a new battery and started it up. It sounded spot on. I was interested, but not at that money.

Image

It was still reasonable value at that price, but it was time to play hardball. I offered £300, which was rejected, then £350. For this I would take the car away as it is, without driving it, and without his one week warranty. A deal was struck for £370, to include the tax (end of Jan) and I drove it away. Wood and all.

Image

Instantly I noticed knocking from the front suspension, but my first port of call was the local halfords for some LHM.

Image

Twelve quid later, and the stop light issue was fixed.

I then stuck twenty quid of fuel in it, and set about the 2hr drive home, where I am now. I even made it without breaking down.

Initial reactions are good. The spheres need replacing as the ride is rock solid, but crucially the Activa part works, and the car doesn't lean. I need to fix the brake lights, along with a few other small jobs. The bodywork is in a bad way, but can be saved.

The interior isn't too bad, if you ignore the wood

Image

It has a 6 cd changer in the boot, and a traffic master button too. I need the key code for the radio tho.

Oh, and I found a quid in the ashtray, so this one cost me £369.

Is this one of the last xantia Activas?

I have just given the car a quick once over and its looking better. I really want to go to town on the bodywork to see if I can get it a bit nicer, but that will have to wait to next weekend now.

Image

Most importantly, I have fixed the rear brake lights. The switch behind the pedal wasn't located properly. A quick fiddle and it clipped into place....made me wonder if this car was being used by somebody attempting insurance fraud...those switches don't come loose on their own...

Excellent stuff :-D Im glad you have saved this Activa, it was looking very sorry for itself on autotrader.

It will be interesting to see how the Activa system works with good spheres ... though by the sounds of things its ok.

£20 for a two hour drive, you must have been going slowly ...

Yes, I don't trust the car yet!

Anyway, final update for tonight. I have removed the 3 remaining mud flaps.

This is how it stands for now.

I wonder if I can ask, are you going to be refitting the mudflaps?

My V6 Xantia is missing the passenger side rear one, I'd buy it off you if you were willing to give it up?

Wonderful stuff and welcome back to the Activa club :-D

That's a good looking project and a few weekends of work will transform the car... very often what appears to be a tired and unloved car can be a real good 'un with just a touch of TLC.

Any thoughts on the knocking from the front end? Activas normally knock from the back...

You are welcome to the mudflap. I only have 3, and don't intend on refitting them.

Thanks Jim. At a guess I'd suggest just the arms or Droplinks. It's the typical noise you get when they need replacing.

If its on the n/s its the front ram joints that have gone, only droplinks on the o/s.

Perfect :-D Nice and easy. If it was the nearside it would be a bit of a different matter but against that, the ram balljoints are massive and rarely fail...

Any chance you can link me to the correct one on eBay so I can order it please?

I also need to think about spheres. The ride is firm, but corners well. Where do I start? The 4 main spheres?

Final question, my sports button doesn't work..

Ideally you should at least have all 10 pressure checked, as Activas are very specific about their pressures.

Does the sport mode cut in and out on its own?

The sport button doesnt light you mean?

I feared you would say that. Gonna have to work through them somehow.

The light on the sports button isn't working, but couldn't tell you if it was or wasn't working ATM

I think the light is just in the button and not anything to do with if it is working or not. The light is quite dim when it is on. Though im not sure about an S2, does that have a dash light?

If the suspension ECU is stuck in sports, it will give an awful ride ...
