Is all that rigmarole really necessary myglaren? I've had my battery disconnected umpteen times, to fix an airbag fault, a turbo fault, etc.etc., fitted a new battery (twice) just reconnected it and never had any problems.

It is certainly recommended as shorttucs can lead to loads of problems particularly with satnav equipped models.
It is certainly a pain but less of a pain that a possible trashed ECU.

You might have to hold the window switches up with the window closed for a few seconds. One of my windows stopped responding to the button the other day and that made it play ball again.

you may have lost your antipinch, imperial..
you might have to open and close all windows once before autoclosing works.
