Just wondering what you run yours on as i've run them all through my old XUD's and even run the L322 on BioD now with some odd 2stroke and old engine oil thrown in...

In the older days due to divorces/joblessness (only for about 8 weeks, thank heavens!), I asked myself the question "Is this fluid likely to burn?". If so, it went in the tank.

The XUD is quite fussy in what it will actually run on. What you really want is a late 80s VW or Merc TD. They really will run on any old muck.

I never knew it was actually illegal Den but it makes sense that it is...

And a bit smoky too I'd have thought... It's dangerous as used engine oil contains a lot of nasty stuff as a result of exposure to combustion by-products and is believed to be carcinogenic. Not the kind of stuff you really want to be burning again and spewing out of the exhaust in my humble...

I guess it would be OK to burn used LHM gradually in small doses. Does it produce green smoke?

Doesn't seem to create that much smoke at all Jim, though I never added more than a litre at a time to a tank of veg, and only did that after oil changes - I didn't run the car off the stuff, that would be foul. I've put an entire old bottle of 2 stroke oil I found in there once and disposed of some unwanted paraffin that way too.

Many years ago someone gave me a gallon of petrol that had been stored in an old oil container. I put it in my old Lada 1200.

It smoked. Lots and lots. Being an old Lada, it ran perfectly ok though!

I find diesel does the trick just nicely

Saying that, if I had an XUD which was used daily then I would probably give veg oil a ago. As our two are such low milers its pointless.

I never knew it was actually illegal Den but it makes sense that it is...

Not paying the duty on it would be illegal, that's what caught out the veg burning Welsh taxis many years ago.
If you paid the required amount (same as diesel as it's diesel substitute) then, other than possible breach of environmental laws, you should be in the clear.

True Xac you could pay the tax around 80p but running old engine oil and paying 80p a lt tax i wouldn't believe anyone who said they were.Thats just me though.

Duty is a whisker above 58ppl at the moment.
So with a bit of a flush you'd get what? 6L from an oil change, 4-5L from a LHM change, so say 10L for just over £5.80
Not bad, cheaper than veg.
Change your neighbours' cars' oil and you could maybe fill a tank a year.
Sit back and smile knowing that processing your duty payment is probably costing HMRC more

I believe that the cost of processing payments was what helped set the duty free limit at 2500L
People using over that much are likely to be considerablely over making the duty payments worth taking as they are most probably biodiesel producers/wvo collectors getting it cheap or free.
For most home users, paying duty on top of the price of veg makes it more expensive than diesel so if I were to hit the limit I would just switch to derv.

Yes I know there is very little HMRC can do to prove that you have used over 2500L since April as a home user, but lets presume if I hit the limit I'd firstly know about it from keeping simple records *cough* and would switch to diesel until the next financial year *cough*cough*
