Xantia-Sphere Specs

Unread post by NewcastleFalcon »

I need to change a front offside and a rear nearside sphere on my M-reg 1.9td (non-sinker)

It would be nice if there was a little table which mapped out exactly what spheres were required for reference. MIne is probably the most straightforward of all 6 in all I think, but not sure of the pressure specs for front and rear. I seem to remember taking one back to GSF because when I got it home the sphere they had supplied in the box was the wrong pressure for the rear corner ones.

The original specs will be on service citroen, but its unlikely that I will be buying new citroen original parts (unless they are on e-bay) and more likely to be eurocarparts or GSF.

On a purely selfish basis can anyone tell me what the pressure ratings should be for front, and rear corners for my m-reg 1.9td non sinker? Others may find an accumulation of data for the various other variants of the Xantia stable useful when they come to replace their spheres.

Are there any other suppliers of spheres apart from the aforementioned GSF and Eurocarparts which forum members have used. Anything direct from France/E Europe/China.....maybe even the good old UK...for example?

Just to link in to other useful posts I will be re-reading this before doing the sphere job

Spheres Hydraflush and Brake Bleeding

I will also be getting out my axle-stand and bent threaded rod sphere removal tool

Thanks

Neil

Try the "xantiaworld" Finnish site.

It's main shortcoming is that some of the part numbers have been changed by Citroën in the last couple of years, so it only quotes the old ones. However, that's often what you encounter on Fleabay as NOS.

Trust no sphere to be at nominated pressure; always test first.

Currently at GSF these would appear to be the spheres I need

REAR SUSPENSION SPHERE (30)
Part No : 453PC0021 £28.32
FRONT SUSPENSION SPHERE (55)
Part No : 453PC0210 £28.32

Is 55/30 the standard spec for a June 95 registered 1.9TD. I notice GSF also do a 70 bar FRONT SUSPENSION SPHERE
Part No : 453PC0220 £28.32 for engine code XUD9TE to constructon 05/95. I would think my car's construction date would be in this category.

Thanks

A couple of months ago AEP spheres were at the lower old fad price, about £20
Might be worth checking theirs for a price comparison

1.9TD SX Xantia Hatchback (Jenny) running on 100% veg for sale

Thanks for the replies

My RPO (dont know what that stands for) number is 6618. Had a look at the AEP site once you add on the delivery its pretty much the same as GSF. Do AEP claim that their spheres are OEM, and does that therefore imply that they are exactly the same as you would get in a nice Citroen Box? I had a bit of trouble sealing a rear corner sphere, where the sphere meets the strut, but the genuine citroen article from my old car sealed up no problem.

Dont think AEP make mention of the pressure (70,55,30 or whatever in their product descriptions)

Thanks for the link Malcolm, the table covers most if not all citroens,as well as the good old Xantia.

regards

Thanks

Looks like GSF have changed their part numbers

They seem to distinguish between Xantia 1.9TD (non-hydroactive) up to 06/05 with XUD9TE which have 70bar/40bar spheres front/rear.....part nos 453PC0220 (front) and 453PC0060 (rear)

and

Xantia 1.9TD 1994-1998 (non-hydroactive) part nos...453PC0210 (front 55bar)/453PC0021 (rear 30bar)

(My engine has engine code D8B which equates in Haynes (Chapter2B.1) to XUD9 TF)

May not make that much difference and could well be that my xantia has inherited or developed spheres at different pressures in any case. I am replacing one from the front and one from the back at opposite corners more to pass the bump test in the MOT, than to reestablish the perfect ride. Its a coin toss which ones to go for.

Two questions.

Firstly like conventional springs and dampers is it not better to replace spheres in pairs?

Secondly how does sphere pressure affect the ride? For example do higher pressure spheres make the ride 'softer'?

Mike

I'll plump for a 55 and a 30, and when the other 2 corners go I will do the same :)
Strangely enough according to the RPO number I share the same birthday as my car :) As Harry Hill would say...what are the chances of that happening? I actually bought the car for £300 on the very same day.

Thanks Neil

Thanks Malcolm

I think I will be going for the GSF spheres.

From the AEP website they state

"At AEP Direct we stock IFHS suspension spheres as they are the OEM parts on Peugeot, Renault and Citroen and many other makes of car".

Does this mean that IFHS spheres were Original Equipment for Citroens?

i feel the main thing to check when purchasing spheres is they are new not re/con,

as there have been companies out there selling re/con for what you pay for the likes of AMTEX,

i usually buy AMTEX which i belive are produced by GSF,

although i think IFHS spheres are ok
