The criteria is not how much you paid for the car initially Pete, it is more how much the job costs to do.
If the mechanic has to buy the parts there is a cost involved for him, so he has to put a markup on that price and add VAT to it.
Then there is the time involved. He has to charge an hourly rate to cover his fixed costs and make a profit.
Together they could well approach the price you paid for the car but how much is the car worth if it eats it's engine because the work wasn't done in time or properly. Or how much would it cost to recover from that if it happened?
