Xantia P Bush Metal Cracking

Unread post by addo »

Bit of a shock, this one.

Car was handling more and more like a sack of spuds; finally the new P bushes arrived and I whipped out the lower arms. Offside "strap" on the P bush was 90% fatigue cracked where it transitions from curved to tabbed.

No wonder it was a bit squirmy! Could have been interesting if it let go at 100MPH.

My father's VSX NSF actually suddenly failed whilst he was driving home triggered by catching a pothole!
I put it down to manufacturing defect of the one 'p' bush as it hadn't been fitted new on the car long.
The car was actually still driveable (just about!) with handling more akin to a lesser marque'd car!

The bush is rusty in the picture as the car sat for a while whilst an alternate arm was found and rebuilt
and the weather improved - I cannot see rust was the cause of the failure. I've never seen another
mention until now Adam so this does pose a weakness that has an opportunity to catch Xantiae owners
out and something to check for!!

Nearside was worse, the lower tab was starting to crack and the top one was well advanced. Another 5000 to failure, maybe.

Malcolm - these bushes were Sasic, purchased locally for about $120/set. The 405 ones I got through yourself have been fine so far.

This sort of failure is really rather shocking...

Never heard of this Sasic mob Addo. Are they Chinese by any chance?

No, French!

http://www.sasic.com/html/index.php?con ... me&lang=fr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They're a big name. I put the failure down to misalignment by the installer (not me) and lack of stress relieving.

the only way these bush's can be mis/aligned is the orientation on the spigot,

the way this bush fits there is no need to do the final tightening with the weight of the car on its wheels

I meticulously aligned the tangs of the bush when it was originally fitted on the arm that eventually failed
and it was a short duration of time and mileage when it failed although TBH I have always worried I must
have somehow fitted it although never had issues with any of the many I've done before. The brand wasn't
known but they were a GSF purchase. The opposite mirror is still on the car fine today and believe me I've
checked it thoroughly.
