Unread post by JSP_AX »

recently when trying to start my ax in the morning the glowplug light come on for about 2 seconds and then goes off when trying to start the car it is a pain in the neck even with turning the key several times, when warm the glow plug light comes on for much longer and the car starts first time is it my glow plugs that are finished also does my oil leak from the crankshaft oil seal have something to do with this

It sounds like your glow plug relay is shot to me. You can test it with a meter or testbulb ( see xantiarghh's post below...) to see how long it stays on for. I am not sure how long it should be but it is likely to be at least 7 - 8 seconds before the dash lamp goes out for a cold start.. I wouldn't have thought that your oil leak would have anything to do with it.

The light should not go off when you try to start the car - are you sure this is not just the normal delay timing out?
If it does go out when you try to start, check timer connections, and supply voltage to it while you operate starter - it may be 'letting go' when batt volts fall as starter is used.
Glowplugs work like this (at least on BX / ZX):
Light goes off after predetermined time - no longer than 10 s or so.
Glowplugs are still powered up for about a minute, unless you start the engine, in which case they are still powered until the coolant temperature increases or you open the throttle.
A test you could perform is, when car is cold, wait 30 s or so after turning on then operate starter - if it starts OK it points towards the timer releasing prematurely when you operate starter normally
