I agree Mark, I wanted one for years but was put off them as a bad one can need an awful lot doing to make it right and there is no point in having one if its not right. Mine has been owned by two forum members before me and so I thought it was a safe bet and took the plunge. It was also in my ideal spec so it would have been an opportunity missed had I not of gone for it.

Dean keeps threatening to sell his, im not sure if he will but that would be a very good car for someone to buy.

However, im in favour of saving Activas and so this one should be bought, with it in mind that it might need some work to get it performing like an Activa. However, you never know, he has not had it long, the previous owner could have been a knowledgeable enthusiast!

Hi Mike, it has 166,000 miles ... which to my eyes is quite a bit more than 100k ... do you know of many reaching higher than that? I'm pretty sure I'm going to go and get it on Monday if its still available. I'm in oxfordshire so its a 2+ hour drive or nearly 3 hour train journey. but I do really want an Activa .......

Its a difficult one ... for me the MOT hasn't got a lot of value to it as I assume it needs work(Jarring ride and assume ARC isn't working so for now its just a low mpg jarring bad handling car) and I seem to have 2 Xantias already .... and my wife has her own car ...... I was planning on putting some love in to the Activa first before I start driving it regularly. I was also kind of expecting to get it for £300 -£350. This really could be a money pit with no bottom .......

Any Xantia will have a Jarring ride if being driven about in low...

I've known two over 170k. They were both ok. The engines are tough. If it doesn't rattle, knock or smoke, then it should be ok . The one down here that the owner can't decide whether to sell or keep, and forgets to contact people has done 137k and pulls like a train. It is scruffier than that one though

You could also look at it another way, and say that if it's done 166k, it's been reliable so far.. it has MOT, so the suspension must have been at least leak-free and working 2 months ago.

I'd say buy it. If it's really that bad, I'll give you £200 for the bonnet, wings and wheels immediately. If the RAMS are dry, that's your money back immediately without any problem at all..

The jarring ride is 99% likely down to him being a cock and driving it in low because he looks cool in his mind in it. Nothing will have been leaking in Feb, or it won't have passed the MOT. The ARC isn't that complicated, and most need a good clean up rather than loads of expensive new parts. There's a lot of bits under there that can leak, but going back to the MOT, if they passed, they're likely ok..

They're no more of a money pit than any other 90s cars really. There's a few other bits to go wrong, but there's loads of knowledge here, parts can be found cheap, rams can be repaired, and they are great fun. They're an oddity and a toy, but a fun one.

I've just told the guy who can't decide what to do with his to give it me..

Quite right and they can be a lot of fun and surprising to drive.

At £395 (I was going by the advert I looked at which said £595) you should probably take the opportunity and get it, you never know, it might be a well sorted car.

As Mike says, the MOT is a bit of an indication as to its condition a few months back. It doesnt guarantee a good car, obviously, but it gives you some idea.
