Toyo R1-Rs, even I had to google those

Image

I like Toyos and I have always gotten on very well with the T1-Rs, I thought a superb tyre, wears quick but they grip very well and they are cheap so I dont mind having to replace them more often. I notice they are available in 205.55.15 size but not standard Activa 60 profile. Though the T1-Rs seem to get mixed reviews, they obviously suited my car and driving style. Only thing I could fault them for was heavy wear on the outside tyre shoulders, my C5 balded the edges much sooner than the rest of the tyre, tracking was spot on.

CF-1s are ok, ive had them on a few cars and found them to be fairly good for the price, dry grip I found good but wet could have been slightly better, not bad though. These are the only Toyos available in the Activas standard size.

Those R1-Rs get excellent reviews:

Ive not even seen them before, I imagine they will suit an Activa a treat :-D

Yes, I usually go for 38psi all round. Looks like there is a Sportrac 5 out now.

I've got a set of T1 r's on the Zx , not a bad tyre at all for the money . It doesn't do much mileage so wear isn't an issue really .

I dont rate the Toyo T1-R, i had them on my Maestro and they were useless even when new, i've also got them on the Fiesta, originally on the back but i put them on the front after the rear stepped out in the wet, i now have Michelin PE2's on the back and its like glue, downside is i now have chronic understeer on roundabouts and third gear wheels spin, its a 1.6 FFS. Avoid, old tech tyre thats cheap for a reason now and times have moved on rapidly on tyre development.

I wouldnt say that at all Gareth, they are a fairly soft compound and dry grip is very good with a high rate of wear, i would say about average in the wet, its testimony like this that makes me wonder how consistant tyre quality is within certain brands.

XM Prestige PRV6 92
Talbot Express Autotrail Chinook 89
Mitsubishi L200 Trojan 14

Service Citroen is awesome, it shows me pictures of all the parts i used to be able to buy............

Maybe the higher profiles are more forgiving, i'm basing my experience on a 50 profile. Dry grip is fine, wet grip is barely above a budget tyre. I know alot of racers use them because they are so soft but this doesnt always make a good road tyre. More recently Bridgestone has impressed me for its all round grip, i had them on the Puma, even the fronts down to 3mm were better than my Toyos at 6mm. I'll only be buying Michelin or Hankook from now on for all my vehicles, false economy in the long run and you'll only kick yourself for buying something that doesnt perform all round, spoils the fun of driving completely.

I've got to replace all the tyres on my Activa very shortly. I've not worn them out but they've deteriorated through old-age.

Given you all know how I drive and that my Activa see very little real use, give me a recommendation please :)

Thanks!
Jim

I thought my T1-Rs were decent, I got a new set during the snow a few years ago and they pulled my C5 around where other cars were getting stuck in deep snow. Quite surprising, though I guess the V tread design helped to grip the snow. I also liked them in the wet but they were excellent in the dry. My C5s current Michelin Primacys are better in the wet, but they are £145 each vs the Toyo £110.

I wouldn't have the CF-1s on the Activa though, I want the best possible and they are not quite it. There is no point in having an Activa if its on plastic tyres, as you can't use the cars abilities, especially in the wet.

I would say that Uniroyal RainsportIIs are a much better performing tyre than the T1-Rs, wet grip is superb and wear rate is better. Dry grip is good, not the best but grip does not drop off on wet roads ...

I always like to stick to Michelins Gareth, all our cars have Michelins fitted to at least the front wheels, mostly all fours. But the energy savers are not tyres for an Activa, too soft on the sidewalls for one thing. I might well try some Hankooks, they are a tempting price and get decent reviews, a shame the Evo 2 is not in the Xants size, but it is in the C5s size. Saying that, there are many decent tyres available for my C5.

I think I'll go with the Vredesteins when I replace the Activas tyres, doubt that will be long as its current fronts are looking aged and have awful wet weather grip. Mind, I try not to use it in the rain

Can be bought from here. :-D

Jim, I think you would do very well to fit the Vredesteins which im thinking about. They look great, are priced well, get excellent reviews and perform well in the wet too. Whats more I got a pair for an XM about 5/6 years ago and they are still on the back of the XM estate now, looking like new with no age cracks appearing, bearly worn at all and grip has not dropped off either.

Thanks Chris :-D They look the part and I like the price  I've found the Contis that are currently fitted good but they are showing more cracks than our present government... Not sure how long they've been on either. All I know is they were on the car when I bought it and that was a few years ago now...

I was thinking about them but i cant get them in my size, might just get the xm's Perreli P zero nero's put on the back and get new Toyo's for the front as i want a bigger profile tyre on the Activa as gearing is too low as it is and i want to go for some new rubber all round on the xm, probably mitchelins, just got mitches all round on my comp car and as a day to day tyre they seem good.

Here is a review page on the Vredesteins Jim, they do appear to get good reports. :)

My other suggestion would be Uniroyal RainExperts. Again great reviews and the same price as the Vredesteins, Uniroyals are usually very good tyres.

I dont think its worth paying the price for a Conti, Michelin, Pirelli etc when the above tyres are well proven. :)

Dean, what is your company car?
I do like Michelins, they are usually good tyres, grip well and suit Citroens very well. Our XM has Michelins on the front and they are very well suited. My C5 has Michelin HPs, which are very good and even wear well too, given my driving. I can see me getting 20K from them.

I'll go with the Vredesteins Chris, the Uniroyals don't look as nice as the Vredesteins :) They'll be better on the V6 I reckon... So, four Vredesteins and two Uniroylas will be on order soon... The V6 got an advisory on her fronts for being perished...
