quote:
Johnd: It was more of a cynical statement. I appriciate that not all old people are bad drivers, perhaps its just because I live in a stereotypical seaside retirenment town and so see more of it. Fact is reactions etc get slower and I would quite happily take another test when im that age as being dangerous by yourself is one thing but if you endanger other drivers around you then thats another. I could start about women drivers but I wont :)

I think that if you took a straw poll, at least around here, the worst drivers are in the 17-50 age bracket. Going through red lights and tailgating are far more dangerous than having reaction times that may be (subject to test) 25% longer.
Being permanently in a hurry and full of suppressed aggression are things that ought to be part of a psychological test included in the driving test. Methinks that the failure rate would go sky-high, but our roads would be safer.
Maybe we ought to ban pedestrians > 65 because they may get in our way? [}:)]

I agree, the general level of driving is getting worse. In the space of 30 seconds whilst in my friends car on saturday we were nearly run off the road twice by people driving away from the side of the road without looking around to see if any cars were in the way!
I spent 3 months without driving due to breaking my collar bone and after this time off and watching loads of traffic/speeding programs etc I take it easier now, no more 35 in 30 limits etc and it cracks me up when you get these people right on your ar** as heven forbid youre only doing 30 in a 30 limit! However I still get annoyed at people that do 45 on open 60 limit roads espcially when quite often the same people keep doing 40-45 when you get to the 30 limit. As you mention above, everyone tailgates so you cant even overtake as theres no gaps to pull into, with the old tuned visa you could just pull out and overtake 5+ cars but the poor zx doesnt have the grunt
pedestrians are fine although theres 1 road in my town where they think they have the right of way. I have no idea why as there was never a crossing there or anything but they just walk in front of cars so you have to be extra careful there :)

I like to put my TD in fifth and floor it when doing 30!![}:)][}:)] Watch the cloud of black smoke, and the expression on the face of the tailgater. Ah, it's the simple things in life.[:D][:D]

Hi
Tailgaters really get on my nerves too! [:(!]
I just check theres nobody behind them, Then I stamp on the ABS, I could do with a new back bumper.

heh bit dangerous! what you could do instead is gently apply the brake with your left foot so the brake lights come on and they think youre stopping and suddenly brake themselves. Note: practise this first as the first time most people attempt to left foot brake they nearly go through the windscreen :)

Hi
I tried that left foot braking & just couldnt get on with it [:(]
Ill stick to the ABS option, Vent discs on front & solid disc on back + Bosch ABS = very quick stopping! lol

Sometimes a flash of the rear fog lamps has a similar effect on tailgaters, provided you have two and they're co-located with the brake lights...

Hi
But the rear foglights need the headlights to be on to work & I cant be bothered to turn the headlights on, then press another switch for the rear fog lights.
Anyway I could do with a new back bumper. lol [:D]

theres only 1 rear fog on my zx 16v which really winds me up. The hole is there on the other side but no light and it has twin front ones! Almost as stupid as cars with only 1 reversing light

My son's Saxo VTR had only one rear fog light. We took the other light assembly out and found that all the wiring runs to it, and the bulbholder is fitted. There was a plastic bar moulded across the hole the bulb pokes through into the lens assembly. We cut the bar off with a pen-knife and fitted a bulb. Voila! Twin rear fogs! How much as an optional extra I wonder?

If it's anything like my back bumper it'll take quite a bit of bumping - A few months ago I had a "coming together" with a Rover 45 driven by an idiot boy racer. I stopped at the roundabout and he didn't. The impact destroyed the front of his car, and I think my towball went through his radiator. The only damage to the Xantia was the towbar electrical connector cover and a small impression by the towing eye cover on the bumper. Since the car's a bit tatty anyway, I've never bothered doing anything about it...

That's the other reason for fitting a towbar....

Gail Taters. The most effective cure I have found, is simply to take your foot off. Sooner or later, the fact you are decelerating percolates through to the both brain cells of the halfwit behind you and he (never she!!) overtakes. Much better in front of you[:)]
In France, many fit tow bars with no tow ball, and have no intention of towing anything.
