Hi guys, changed the shoes, cylinders and handbrake cables on my wifes xsara today and I'm not convinced I've got the big spring across the top and the small retaining spring which goes from down the split pin for the adjuster to the hole in the shoe in the right holes / order.
Anyone got a diagram or picture of them in position, they are girling shoes on a '98 1.9TD 5 door hatch if it makes any difference.
At the moment the spring which comes out of the pin is over the big spring but this way I'm sure it could vibrate out. Should it be under the big spring, should the big spring fasten to it??
Hope this makes sense to someone.

Re: Diagram or explanation wanted 4 Brake shoe springs on Xs
can you post a picy,
i just looked on service citroen but i haven't worked out the magic of copying images from there to here as yet
,
firstly the top horizontal spring sits above the adjust bar, and i usually fit this by attaching the bar to the shoe with the handbrake lever first, then hook the spring onto that shoe and then onto the other shoe, now tilt the second shoe and aim the top end into it's seat on the adjuster bar,
now
the steel blade lay's onto the roll pin then put the right angled rod into/through the roll pin, now i cant remember were the other end of the rod fits without it in front of me, but wherever it locates the vertical spring hooks onto it in such a way it puts a downward tension on the rod and in turn the steel blade, the bottom/longer end of this spring hooks into a hole near the bottom of the shoe ( but not the lowest hole ),
now fit the shoes to the back plate and at each end of the cylinder,
then seat the bottom end of one of the shoes hook the lower spring onto the lowest hole in both of them, now lever the second shoe into it's seat,
and finally fit the shoe retaining pins and retainers,
regards malcolm

Thanks for your reply malcolm, I've found a similar photo (think it's from a visa) and circled the area I'm not sure about, should the springs connect like this?
I think they probably should but they weren't like that when I took them off, the long horizontal spring actually connected to the shoe not the other spring. This leaves the small spring from the pin to the shoe loose and serving no purpose.

that looks correct to me the bit that fits into the roll pin and the horizontal spring hooks onto it what i called the right angled rod, as it is not actual a spring ,
also on service citroen it shows the top spring has the left end is longer than the other end/hook,

Thanks Malcolm, I knew something wasn't right, I'll whip the drums off this afternoon and correct. Any ideas where I can get some new hub nuts, looks as though the drums have been off a fair few times with these nuts and there is nothing left to knock into the recess. I've tried GSF but they don't do them unless you buy the bearing.
** Found some on ebay, £4.50 inc p&P for two nuts and two caps, does Citroen service give you a torque for these?

and the toqure setting for the nuts is 185Nm,
this is the usual these day Adamaddo wrote: Interesting it has peened nuts rather than a castellated nut and overcap with split pin.
AX's, SAXO's ZX's XSARA' 205's 306's, and all of the same eara onwards and i think back as well all have peened hub nuts,

Yes stake nuts are a common fitment on this type of bearing that is torqued up tight

Thanks for the torque Malcolm, unfortunately our branch of GSF mustn't know that they sell them.

i recently bought some to fit a pug 205 from my local GSF, they told me they didn't keep them anymore so i just asked them for a pair of hub nuts by the socket/spanner size, they had them in stock,
