Good news/Bad news

Took the C5 for its MOT this morning. That's two cars done - two more to go. The good news is that it passed its first MOT since I had the particle filter removed some 6000 miles ago. Smoke reading was a bit more than it had been previously but it it still satisfied the machine on the third rev. The bad news is that it got an advisory for the brake cables. So some questions: Are the cables handed? Are they sold singly or in pairs? Do the guide tubes come with the new cables.

Well, it's excellent news it passed with the particulate filter removed John.

Not sure on C5 cables but if they're anything like Xantia ones then yes, they're handed, but don't quite know about guide tubes. If you mean the ones near the compensator box then they're part of the box and will not need replacing. The new cables will come with protection sleeves though...
Hopefully replacement is just as easy on the C5 as it is on the Xantia even though it looks a horror of a job...

No, they're not handed according to service.citroen - although the guide tubes are. They run right up to the lever, so replacement likely more complicated than Xantia. AIUI they are usually rusted into the guide tubes, so these have to be replaced as well - and this is not an easy job *

* all conjecture, I've not actually done it although This thread goes into the horrors that await, and I seem to have dug my oar in there too

Looking at the parts list it seems the cables are not handed they're both part number 4725.R5 but the cable guides are handed and the part numbers are LH 4769.20 and RH 4769.21

I was just surmising Richard Truth is I know less than very little about the C5 and fall into the trap of thinking it's basically a Xantia under the skin...

Have you noticed any improvement in fuel consumption since removing the DPF? I take it yours is a 2.2.

No! It's the 136 2ltr HDI. And No again, there hasn't been any great difference in fuel consumption. Figures are spread widely depending upon how and where it's driven. Keep below 65 on a motorway and it registers middle 50's. A cold start and then the 8 miles up to junction 9 of the M25 and it's about 32mpg. My recent drive from Malaga with 1200Kgs of caravan gave me 28mpg over the 1380 miles.

What I did notice immediately after the filter was out was an increased alceleration from standing. Now, I guess I'm just used to it.

Thanks John, that's better than my 2.2, driving at 60 mph with a glass slipper it just makes 50 mpg, the 406 does 60+.

Our C5 estate (2002 SX 2.2 auto) had its DPF removed plus engine remap towards the end of last year, and it passed its MOT last week no trouble.

always change the guide tubes as the cables do rust in place.. ive done this job and it WAS AND IS a real pita!! the off side tube is a pig it get into its place.. i managed it in the end.. its a dam bloody stupid idea.. the ends of the tube point in an upwards direction.. so when the end of the brake cable split and water starts getting in it runs down the tube and collects.. why o why they didnt stick to the xantia type cable is no ones guess... you can bend them to get them in place.. metal tubes no so... have fun dooing them!!!

Yes! I've got them all on order. The cables from Amazon (of all places) at a good price compared with other sellers and the two guide tubes off ebay. Can't say I'm looking forward to doing the job. What's the view on greasing the tubes before putting the cables through? Is the grease likely to cause the outer cable to deteriorate?

I haven't looked at the cables on my C5, guess I'll have to sooner or later, I wonder if in view of the problem with these guide tubes it might be possible to chuck em away and use/adapt Xantia cables instead.

iirc correctly its all a no... as the caliper end has a "O" loop to hook on the caliper.... as for the hand brake lever end i cant remember now... and c5 and xantia calipers appear in conpatible...

My 2.0 Hi 138 16v does 47.8 MPG almost without fail with my usual driving. I far from have glass slippers, more like lead boots! Though many of my miles are on the motorway at 70-80 mph. Im sure you could easily get 60 from it Peter, ive had 65mpg on my run home from work a few times, though driving very very lightly.
