I can only think of the Xantia Exclusive HDi, but then cruise was an optional IIRC.
Or the C5 Exclsuive SE.

Budget is £1000 or under, and dont mind a tatty exterior as long as the running and interior is good but a 'downsizing for cost effectiveness' means im shafted and need to sell my recent toys off

Milage is also not a problem

Xantia HDi's weren't available with cruise even as an option, C5 looks like the only option unless you have a suitable length broom handle for Xantia HDi cruise control

Only as an aftermarket fitment, then you might run into problems with insurance.

Cruise is overrated anyway, can't use it much these days

You can get 2.0 Exclusives but IIRC not the SE version which gave you satnav leather and sunroof

There are quite a few C5 Hdi's available for well under £1000.00, a couple went on ebay last week for £600-700 with about 250k miles but still looked quite good. The SX version has most of the toys

The early 8 valve engine is the most reliable and economical, it might run OK on 'proper' biodiesel but definitly not on chip fat.

Cruise controls tend to make you use more fuel, when you come to a hill they will open the throttle to maintain speed, you do much better just letting it slow down a little.

That's the problem, my next job may be 30-50mins+ away on the motorway so cruise will help keep mpg up behind the artics

I've found with my Cc what I lose up the hill I gain going down the hill but it could be very different with a c5...

just stick to 70 - many years of zipping about in yellow dhl vans , theres not alot of difference between 70 and 90 except fuel - you allways run into traffic

Stick to 55-60 most of the time to be honest as even at the reccomended minimum distance(from an arctic bum!) it saves fuel

I do most of my long journeys in the slow lane with the lorries and get 60+ mpg from the 406

2-3 times better than the current MPG i attain..

Gunna go searcing for after market cruise controllers and see if anything may work as veg is 93p/litre currently i will likely get an old XUD donk as they are cheap enough and if it breaks it could likely be sold back on the bay for not too much money and thus mitigate loss/depreciation!
