Xantia S2 horn failure

Folks, I am looking for some advice to guide me in troubleshooting my car's refusal to tootle.

I had noticed that the airhorns I had fitted (powered via a relay, switched using the original horn circuit and a fused power feed from the battery) had become somewhat lacklustre recently. However, now they don't tootle, peep parp or even squeak.

I have run a power feed to the airhorns to test them, and they appear dead

However, as well as this, I have discovered (using a working horn from a pal's stash) that there is no power at all on the original horn circuit, which is used to operate the power relay.

Can someone advise me on further investigation steps, before I give up and go to my citroen indy?

First lesson of electrics: CHECK THE FUSE

airhorns had indeed died, must have taken the fuse out with them.

Donor horn fitted, peep, toot and parp all restored.

Did they freeze or something? It's rare I see airhorns that are terminally dead, save for the 405 units where internal waterlogging corroded the brush springs to nothing.

Looks like internal corrosion of the compressor as a result of moisture getting in through the air intake. Daft design really having the air move through the motor, it's not really going to last well in the british climate.

Designed and made in Italy where the locals use their horns constantly; a generous flow of air through the motor is essential to stop it burning out.

LOL, interesting theory!

Fiamm compressors for a long time had a separate compression chamber from the electrics and you were encouraged to both oil it regularly and test regularly. Holding the horn on whilst cranking might be a little OTT though...

I quite fancy upgrading from the temporary horn a pal gave me from his old pug 206 ( a weedy sounding Fiamm electric horn) so I am looking for recommendations for severely loud horns, airhorn or otherwise.

Try a pair of electric horns from an Alfa 147, or a Stebel Nautilus kit.

Twas a Nautilus I had which died, they are also no longer made
The current equivalent model is a lot more expensive, and appears significantly larger and therefore harder to find room for.

Amazon have several Nautilus horns.

looking more closely those are listed as "not stebel", though they do look similar. I have seen them on ebay as well for a lot less so might try them.

I toyed with fitted some train horns to my Shed of Show Visa Special but they're a bit too dear for my liking. In the end I opted for a roof mounted lorry horn powered by full size compressor in the boot...

followed your link, atthe bottom it states

DROP BY AND SEE OUT SHOWROOM OVER 50 POWDERED HORNS TO LOOK AT AND TEST

now im not sure what a powdered horn is but im damn sure i wouldnt want to see 50 of them, not really my thing.
