Does anyone have any thoughts on or experience with this sphere removal tool ?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-XANTI ... 720wt_1102" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is it "man enough" to remove rear spheres ? :) If it relies on that single bolt to clamp the sphere tight is there going to be any tendency for it to slip ?

That is the one I have here. Can't remember if it goes on to all the spheres but is ok. I think I welded some more on to it for bracing.

The software control of these transmissions is fairly complex, but there are two main (and largely independent) sets of algorithms. The first is the auto-adaptive map selection which selects one of a set of maps which control the transmission change points, based mainly on the recent usage of the accelerator and brake. Each map contains fixed values, the adaption is achieved by selection of map. Sport and Snow modes are just 2 of the maps.
Mandrake wrote: I was trying the sport mode a bit today, certainly makes a hell of a difference, does the sport mode have any auto adaptive learning behaviour as well ?

I'm also interested to know how the snow mode works, (owners manual is missing) I understand that it skips 1st gear and starts off in 2nd gear (certainly feels like it) but does it also remap the shift points and clutch operation ?
Yes the snow mode skips first gear and has low change points for the other gears.

Sports mode can be selected automatically by very enthusiastic driving, but snow mode is only available using the switch.
Mandrake wrote:(Not sure if that box has electronically controlled variable slip clutches or not)
With the exception of the lock-up clutch in the torque convertor, the clutches are not intended to slip at all during normal operation, and are on/off devices, but during gear changes, the ECU controls the interval between one set of clutches being released and the next set engaged.

The second set of algorithms in the ECU adjusts the smoothness of gear changes to compensate for manufacturing tolerances, clutch wear and oil condition. The ECU measures clutch slip during changes and adjusts the timing of clutch activation to ensure smooth changes with minimal slip under differing power scenarios. This algorithm is usually completely invisible to the user, unless the parameters have been reset with a Lexia, or the transmission has an unusual fault.

Good luck with your repairs (get a bigger hammer for the spheres!).

Ok good to know. I've ordered one from the guy so we'll see what happens. Tried the band spanner on one of the front spheres - broke first time I used it. (Ok Jim, you can laugh now) The band grips extremely well with no slippage, and it did undo the sphere, but the amount of metal around one of the swivel pins in the mechanism is insufficient and it just sheared away. Not too impressed. The band spanner I had back in NZ looked similar in design but must have been a lot more rugged - it removed dozens of stubborn rusted spheres over 10 years and never broke despite having a 40cm pipe slid over the handle for extra leverage and being constantly hammered at with a lump hammer.

Onto the next Chapter in the Xantia V6 story. (perhaps I should just rename this thread a day in the life of Simon's Xantia V6 ? )

I thought I would have a go at fixing the plip today. lexi warned me that the alarm sometimes goes off by itself if armed, so I don't plan to arm the alarm at the moment until I've found out why, but I noticed that the arm/lock button on the plip didn't work at all, and the disarm/unlock button was very intermittent, so I pulled the plip apart to fix it. (What 13 year old Citroen doesn't have a faulty plip ? My previous one was faulty at 8 years old before I fixed it...)

Much to my amusement I found the lock/arm button floating around loose inside the case having come away from the board completely, and cracked joints on the other button so I soldered both buttons back in place and the plip is now working fine.

However in playing around with arming/disarming and locking/unlocking the door I managed to set the alarm off, and I'm a bit puzzled as to how I did it. I think what caused it was locking the doors with the plip and then unlocking the door a few seconds later with the key - as soon as I opened the door the alarm went off. Anyone know why ? I would have thought that as soon as I unlocked the door with the key it would disarm the alarm before I could open the door ? Is it possible I pressed the arm button as I was turning the key to unlock the door ? It does seem rather too easy to press the arm button unintentionally when manipulating the key as the button seems to stick out a bit higher than the other button - is this intentional ?

If I lock the car with the plip must I also unlock it with the plip ? Any tips on do's and dont's with the alarm ? I sure miss having an owners manual to explain all these little things. (I'd love to know what the smaller stalk below the indicator stalk is too! My other Xantia never had one of those... )

The smaller stalk below is for the cruise control. There is a switch on the dash with an arrow on it. Press this then lift the small stalk gently to engage the cruise control. Lifting the stalk increases the speed, pushing down reduces it. Pulling towards you disengages it and is re-engaged by lifting again. It also disengages if you touch the brakes.

That's normal alarm behaviour Simon =D> If you press the lock button a second time, the car will deadlock itself too. If you want to pop down the road to Lanark, you are welcome to borrow the manual for my MK2 - if I can find it (ah actually I think it's in the car.... worth a check that yours is not in the handy pocket in the flap over the fuses above the driver's knee.... :-D ).

Ah I see. I thought it might be something like the headlight washers

Well it looks like it doesn't work, when I turn on the switch on the dashboard (the left arrow with a car symbol ?) and then press the stalk up or down I hear a relay click from between the seats and another click when I touch the brakes or pull the stalk towards me, so something is happening, but it doesn't maintain the speed. Another job to do I guess.

What part is normal behaviour ? The alarm going off ?

Or do you mean that if the car is locked with the plip unlocking it via the key in the door will inevitably set the alarm off ? :?
If you press the lock button a second time, the car will deadlock itself too.
Ah ok, tried that and I can hear it. My previous Xantia didn't have an alarm and was a Mk1 with the single button plip, so there was no way to activate the deadlock from the plip, that I knew about anyway, however turning the key to lock and holding it for a couple of seconds did activate the deadlocks.

Thanks for that, I'll keep it in mind although I'm trying not to drive too far on dead flat rear spheres, so I'm doing essential trips only until they are sorted out. No, the book is not in the fuse flap.

Headlight washers work automatically when headlights are on and you use the screenwashers. It's part of the comfort pack i.e. heated seats, cruise control, heated washer jets and headlight washers. :-D

To be pedantic, the heated seats, headlight washers and heated screen washers are part of the Winter pack (which seems to be fitted to all MK2 Exclusives in the UK, but not, for instance, in France).

The cruise control non-operation is likely to be due to a split rubber hose where it connects to the vacuum pump. Accessed from under the bumper on the LH corner. An easy fix, just shorten the hose a little. The first time you do it, you may need to remove the bumper for access, but for subsequent repairs (it splits regularly), you can do it blind with one hand from below.

Re the cruise control it's worth removing the brake pedal rubber and cleaning the contacts on the brake pedal switch's, for models with cruise there is a separate switch built into the pedal specifically for cruise, common fault.

True, but Mandrake says he can hear the relay when touching the brake, so in this case his brake switch should be OK. Just trying to reduce the risk of breaking something that doesn't need fixing.
