He tried, but his touchpad wouldn't work and the computer ground to a halt whenever updates were installed ;p

Touchpad works a treat with Precocious Pangolin :-D

I know, been there and tried it with a daily release of the aforesaid...

I have stupidly been reading touchpad as touchscreen :(

On all the laptops I have run Ubuntu on, the touchpads have worked right off, no interference.

I did try and run a brand new touchscreen Packard Bell thing at work a few weeks ago. Didn't go well. In fact it failed miserably, mainly because the computer was buggered and wouldn't run anything, including Windows 7.
