Driveshaft Xantia HDI

Unread post by Xantic »

First of all apologies for asking questions and not contributing to the forum but my knowledge is limited on Citroens or any cars to be honest.

I just took the nearside front wheel off my Xantia hdi as i can hear a drubbing noise coming from the front. Happens when you knock it out of gear too so i guess wheel releated.

Bearings seem fine but the driveshaft does not seem to be spinning true, slightly offset even when turning the wheel slowly, and, the noise seems to be coming from the cv joint nearest to the gearbox. I might be wrong butit's just my luck at this moment in time.

Is it an easy job changing the nearside driveshaft, and what tools would i need,(Apart from a can of petrol and a match ) lol.

Does anyone have a driveshaft and if so how much.

Apologies once again as i am forever asking questions and no input.
Would a bearing be damaged on the gearbox do you think because if theres going to be loads wrong and i can't do it then it will be a quick trip to the pawn brokers and get what i can for my gold and buy another car, Citroen of course..

Finances are still not great here and my advice is not to be a Truck driver in South Wales, probably earn more pushing trolleys in Tesco..
Thanks in advance.

No worries Russ, never fret about always asking questions - that's what we're here for!

If you grab the driveshaft can you feel any play in the CV joint that might account for it running apparently off-centre?

Can you describe the noise a bit batter? Inner CV joint failure is often indicated by vibration and roughness. Is it at all speed/gear related?

My bet is that it's a wheel bearing and they're notoriously hard to diagnose except by replacing them.

The N/S is the easy driveshaft to swap. Basically, drain the gearbox oil, Undo the driveshaft/hub nut (35mm - can be tight) wheel off, split the lower swivel joint (need a meaty scissor-type balljoint splitter) minding you don't damage the boot, then tap the driveshaft out of the hub and once free of the hub pull the whole shaft out of the gearbox.

Then reverse the procedure to replace the shaft and refill the gearbox...

Nearside one's the short one ain it? lol, long time since I did mine.

If so, yeh, not too bad a job,no intermediate bearing, IF you can get the hub nut off

BIIIIIG scaff bar

I have a driveshaft you could have, for a fellow trucker :P ..but it's off a mk 1 1.9td?

Dont know what happened to my reply i wrote so i will try again.

A bit of play when i grab the driveshaft both back and fore and front to back if you get my drift. There does seem to be a bit of roughness/vibration but only slightly. Another thing i noticed in the last few weeks, when your just coasting at about 30mph past my local speed camera moneybox. There is a rattle coming what seems like the gearbox, can't describe it but its there and never bothered me to be honest but this wheel if it breaks up then no work, Its hardly worth going for the pittance i get anyway.lol.

Russ, is your HDi a 90 or a 110?

If a 110 does the gearbox rattle when in neutral and the engine idling?

In/out movement on an inner CV joint is normal and essential. Radial play (i.e. back and forth) is not.

It's a 110. and no does not rattle when idling. Only when coming off drive then coasting with throttle off, slight throttle and it stops.

What i am getting at is could it be more than a cv joint. Difficult to answer i know but perhaps someone else might have mentioned this ot it could be used for the future.

I bought this Xantia after learning the hard way of driving a Vectra, sorry for swearing. Been amazing just like the one i sold Paul Citroenxm only this one has no leather, 15k so far and this has been the only problem, 124k on the clock so plenty of life in her yet.

That's good Russ, the gearbox is OK then...

It's not a duff engine mount is it? 110s love to break the small donut in the torque reaction arm from the top engine mount to the inner wing but this is normally a clonk on taking up or cutting drive or when stopping the engine. The lower donut is worth a look too as excessive engine movement can cause all sorts of funnies like this.

Else that, the driveshaft is a relatively easy item to swap but a 1.9TD one won't do. You need to source one from either an Activa or 2.1TD if not a 110HDi and count the ABS teeth. Some have a different number and that'll upset the ABS.

This is getting worse with every post.lol.
You havn't been driving my Xantia while i'm in work have you Jim..You seem to know all the nasty noises i hear..

No clonking but a sort of thud when knocking off, First time that happened was last Friday when i stopped the car at the hospital.. My Mrs said what the hell was that i remember thinking myself but took no notice. Does not happen all the time but it has happened a few times but, this does not explain the whirring noise when turning the wheel slowly coming from the inner joint. Not so loud as but similar to, when we were lads, put a lolipop stick on the wheel of your bike and go fast, You must remember, ah the good old days when we never had to worry about these things as Dad would fix them... I'm getting more depressed by the second not i got to do these things myself..Nostalgia creeps in to most posts i think..
Anyway, watch this space im going to win the lottery tonight and buy a new car..lol.

I dont think a 1.9TD drive shaft will do, arent the diff outputs a different size to HDi ML gearbox's...
