MS Orifice / Outlook Question

I'm slowly dragging everything over to the new computer; it means I have to ditch Outlook Express in favour of something like Outlook.

What is not really clear (having not yet bought the software) is whether the "single user" stipulation of genuine software limits you to one address with Outlook, fullstop. Or is it like OE, where you can flip between email identities readily?

Yes, you can have as many email accounts in Outlook as you wish..

Rather than Outlook, if you just want a good email client which is free and is potentially better than Outlook have a look at Mozilla Thunderbird. It's made by those same folks who bring us the FirePox browser; the Linux port of which is excellent.

Thunderbird is seriously good and not confined to Linux either. There's a Windows port available.

The big issue with Outlook in my view is that it's very resource-hungry and does too much for the average home user.

I use it at home and professionally so it's not just an empty recommendation...

Do you need to download mail Adam?

If not then Gmail can collect your mail from any other providers and send it as though it came from those other email addresses.
I don't actually use this function as I have no real need of it, just have several browsers open with different accounts from the same provider in each.
I did used to use Thunderbird in preference to Outlook - never liked Outlook Express.
And prior to that and Firefox, the whole Mozillasuite - still available so you can integrate the lot. Called Seamonkey now.

I admit a fair chunk of reticence about
(a.) trusting a freeware item to function reliably
(b.) trusting freeware to respect my privacy
(c.) leaving stuff on an external server

I've some exposure to Google's mail service; it doesn't seem bad but I am not a corporate Google fan by any stretch of imagination! At least one Google employee I know, had no qualms about abusing privacy regs when working at a telco, and yet they've clearly passed all the tests to be in a heavyweight position at the big G.

Proper mail (as opposed to me and jgra1 comparing notes on weekend escapades ) requires prompt download/upload of docs, PDFs and shortly dxf/dwg files as well. OE did this quite well. This overlaps slightly with my concerns about privacy; I am not sure what level of interrogation the mail skimming used by Google and Yahoo goes to, but it seems at odds with the idea of a confidential email.

Thunderbird sounds interesting; I will look at it harder. Whichever way it ends up going, I need to have a plan in action by late next week.

You might want to look into openoffice if you're thinking of buying microsoft office, it could be a suitable free alternative, developed by Oracle now.
Then use thunderbird for email.

To be honest there are some large multi nationals I know of that use thunderbird and have for years, although most are moving over to office 2k10...

Do you want a trial version before you buy it Adam??

If you have kids you can get it much cheaper as well...

LibreOffice might suit your needs Adam. Its a free Office suite that's compatible with MS Office file formats and in my (limited) experience, very good. It's very usable and does all you need without a load of knobs on it. It reminds me of Office 97/2003 to a degree - before MS covered it in bits of fluff and tinsel in the name of progress...

My limited experience of it has so far been to write the April Citroenian column and to use the spreadsheet to keep track of my money.

These days there's no need to pay for any software - there's invariably adequate or often better stuff for free.

Really? What are you trying to do Xac? Run an email system for the whole world?

Many ISPs use just that setup.. Look at a few mail headers to see their SMTP sign-on and all is revealed...

Or LibreOffice - essentially the same but run by The Document Foundation and not beholden to any corporate body.

I have that on the Linux machine and OO.o on the Vista machine.

The latter just hasn't caught up yet, Libreoffice came with Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot.


Virtually the same but LibreOffice is striving to update and improve quite rapidly.

Incidentally, I have some Onieric discs here still.
Although it's time is almost up, soon to be replaced by Precise Pangolin

Linux Mint is similar, all the releases have female names.
Ran Gloria for a while and liked it, have Lisa around here somewhere.

I also liked the Debian name (that both derive from)
