service on a 206 XSi 1.6

Chaps, a guy at work has just told me his 110K 206 ought to have a service, as he has not touched it since 30K ..



Belts, tensioner, WP, filters, oil, gearbox oil, and a brake fluid change I am thinking

Anyone done a belt on this engine? I dont think I have worked on one before...

Trans fluid is not changed on a service although it would be sensible to change (or at least top up) good plan.

Don't forget fuel filter as they get overlooked in most cases (fitted near tank on right hand side, easy to change) and coolant too although I see you're doing the waterpump.

Is it the 8v or 16v unit ? , the 8v's are very easy I have not seen a 16v TU to work on (I know they are around obviously)

Early ones are certainly 8v

Is it rear drum brake ? , expect to replace both cylinders in that case. I guess the compensator on the axle will be stuck too (if its got one) although they stick every year due to not having any protection from the elements. Easy again in most cases to rectify with some lubrication.

it's a TU5JP4 - I think an 8V as the 16V was fitted to the 206cc
Quite sure it has discs on back.. He is mot'ing it at end of month so may leave the brakes alone until after that... (can do a quick pad/discvisual for him though)

not sure whether him putting engine oil in the brake reservoir would have screwed things up.. (AA called straight out and removed the fluid before he started or used car)

Cambelt is probably twice the recommended interval, may suggest the chap buys a lottery ticket...

Are you doing the cambelt before the MOT?

Probably a good idea given that a lot of MOT places rev the cars to full revs before the emission test - that could just be the end of the cambelt! My local Citroen specialist always asks if the cambelt is done before they do any reving - though they dont thrash them to full revs.

80K miles without a service? Surely not
I very much doubt the spark plugs will have lasted that amount of time, never mind the oil ... I guess he tops it up!

hi Chris, yes I mentioned to him about the cambelt and the mot.. so would do it before... although he does rag it generally.. so I dont think the mot will be anything strange to it

forgot the plugs! have had too many deisels

You know, I dont think he tops the oil up! will ask him..
but yes, AFAIK he has never had anything done in 80k :O

its a twin cam, just had a look, and rear discs..

the aux is effectively half missing.. looks to have been fitted a rib to far in, although it fits the PS pump ok.. borrowed time indeed..

FWIW you can readily get 50K miles out of a set of plugs these days. Mine are about there now, and will benefit from renewal.

oil + filter , plugs , water+anti freeze and check thermostat , fuel filter , cambelt kit + water pump, aux belt kit - then its look at the mechanicals (bushes, joints etc)

well... it failed the MOT as expected..
sidelights, washers,

inner rear OS pad, and

as it's typed..
NS front (upper support bearing top mount) Macpherson strut worn and seriously weakend..
is this a strut top? or more likely a weakend upper bearing.. wreckers for this part I think..

have spoken to my local factors.. they have the whole bit for about £45.. ( I need to go there tomorrow for oil and antifreeze etc) so all ok.
going to be a cold but dry weekend I think.. will modify a pair of gloves by cutting fingers off

seems the camshafts are not locked in place, just need to mark them when I have manually found TDC..

chaps I need some help,.,
Today was a good day, finished off issues with strut, droplinks and rear brakes done, and then got on with cambelt...

So,, I have changed belt, plugs, emptied the coolant and oil, and refilled. (oil was 30 quid 5/30 fully synth) - oil filter is a weird paper thing..inside a plastic housing.. not seen one before.

I dis and re connected 2 smaller looms, e.g. Spark plug unit, and a pipe or two

now the STOP is flashing on startup..

The battery was disconnected for 4 hours or so..

I only got about 2.5 L of oil out, not a surprise really all things considered. .. I put in about 4L to start with...
I also didn't get much more coolant than that in, so assuming some big airlocks etc...


I could do with some ideas...

I have no lexia or planet, and there are no other warning lights on.. I did not dare run it for more than about 4 mins, in 3 seperate stints..

I can only think oil pressure ;( but what else is gonna give a stoplight? surely nothing on the cambelt/aux belt or coolant?
