ZX Windows/Heater

Unread post by Jfrog »

Have a ZX volcane, great car, but powered windows and sunroof have just stopped working, both at the same time. Passenger one was always slow, as if laboring but worked up to now. Fuses fine and all other electrics working, no dimming of lights etc when window switches pressed. Could this be a relay? If so, anyone know where it is hidden? Dose the window share the same one as the sunroof? Summers coming and my wife is getting hot, and unfortunately badly bothered. Also as I am here the heater does not blow hot in cold weather. I have checked the Matrix a couple times and each time the water ( clear, no rust colour at all) goes though almost as if there was a just a pipe in and out, no resistance at all and from both directions. Pipes to and from the engine are very hot and all the controls under the dash are working fine (had half the dash out to test them all, nothing doing) All I get is some warm air from the central vents above the radio. What more can I do?

I think the heater on the Zx is an air blender and is controlled by flaps rather than by a water valve. Thats why the temperature control works smoothly and has an even resistance throught its travel. Surplus hot air is ducted out (or should be).

Yes I think that how it works too, flaps move air around in side. Still all these seen to work fine, you can hear them moving from one stop to the other. Looks like I’ll have to take the whole heater out (I did the job on a CX once and ouch the memory still hurts) to see whats going on.

What fuses have you looked at? My Citroen ZX handbook says fuse 1, front electric windows and sunroof and electric seats. Fuse 4, warning lights for battery chatge, pad wear, low fuel, lights on audible warning, control for sun roof and for front windows, front/rear wash/wipe. fuse 8, clock, boot lighting, interior lighting, remote locking receiver, sunroof and window control, radio, central locking, alarm and siren.
haynes states:fuse 3: heated rear window, electric window relay, indicators and cooling fans relay(s) fuse 9, electric windows, sunroof, seat adjustment and map reading light.
Confused! haynes is diesel book to 1993, car is september 1994 and as far as I know handbook is original one with car but I can't find a printing date. somehow I think the handbook is correct for our car.
The haynes diagram shows 2 relays in the circuit for the front windows, one a normal one and one a 're-energising' relay and believe it or not the 2 door pillar switches are in the operating circuit for the re-energising relay (doesn't look like a convenient earth either.) the haynes diagrams make no reference to the sunroof.
I was looking for a thermal overload device or something shared by both circuits but my disgram doesn't show anything like that.

Thermal overload switches (bimetal) are build in to the motors, simply to prevent fire in case of stall by overloading.

Hi there Jfrog
Interestingly enough exactly the same has happened to my ZX Aura this morning [B)]. I've lost my Sun roof, front electric windows and map reading lights [:0]. I've swapped the fuses over, and checked all the wiring round the fusebox which seems to be in generally good condition. I'm a little concerned mine could be as a result of wiring chafing somewhere further within the dash-board.
When I very first got the car 18 months ago, the courtesy light used to flicker when actived on the doors on the driver side. Eventually it gave up (light works fine on passanger side doors), and I never really considered it enough of an issue to fix. Now in the last two months, the car's rev counter has become ocassionally erractic...so I'm wondering if these are all symptoms of something more serious. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
Cheers
