clutch helper spring

couple of months back my clutch helper spring came off and my clutch pedal depressed slightly but could still operate

but the problem now is that last nyt my clutch hit the floor with no resistance and i could not engage the clutch

so today I have removed clutch cable but it is still intact with the nylon clip in the foot well still attached

does anybody have any ideas what the problem is ?

could the incident with the helper spring be the problem ?

sorry forgot that part haha.... its a berlingo 2000 model on X

looked at it again and the self adjust looks like it could be gone

would this cause the problem ?

It would indeed and not unknown either. Have a look at Dave2011's thread here for his quick fix :)

ok next problem lol

fitted new clutch cable and still nothing

does any one know anything about how the clutch release lever ?

it seems very slack and is not sprung back towards the front off the car but it seems like it should be??

What engine is in it? Possibly the release bearing has gone through the pressure plate, or the release lever has broken off inside the bell housing. There might be a hole in the gearbox where you can see into the bellhousing - otherwise it's gear box out time.....

its a 1.9 diesel 1868

the clutch release seems to be very slack

whats your gut on it

To check, get someone to operate the clutch while you watch lever on the housing, if its moving OK, as Richard says,I'm afraid you need to have the gearbox out.

the clutch is dipped very low

when pressed the lever moves a tad

feel that the lever should be pushing out more towards the front end of the car as when i pull it out towards the front the clutch rises

when the clutch is down there is a whirl noise the it stops but gears cannot be engaged ????

The lever should move a couple of inches at the cable end.

sounds very much like the clutch has gone, Jamie.. the fact you can no longer change gear and the description of the lever at the box kinda point to that..

it happened to me on a 1.8 petrol xantai..

in my case, I belilve the release bearing had been fitted incorrectly, one day it came free and melted itself through the clutch plate fingers..

these fingers are ultimately what causes the pedal to have spring and resistance..
if you remove the cable from the gearbox end, as peter says you should be able to move the release arm a couple of inches and there should be reistance most of the way.. i would try that first before going any further

Another reason can be failure of the nylon bushings on the clutch release shaft in the gearbox bellhousing. I had this happen on my old Sinker and it caused the clutch to be so bad it would only just release and take up was very jerky...

If it's just the top bush then it can be done in-situ, just. The bottom bush can only be done after removing the gearbox...

You can tell if the bushes are the cause as the clutch release lever will be floppy about its pivot...
