as i feel there the Tesco of the automotive trade, squeeze there supplier down to the lowest half pennie they possible can,

i have to agree with what they are saying here, it sounds release bearing and we all know they fail on release bearings..... luckily i have a stock of slave cylindars :)

I'll be glad to lend a hand Jim, if only to get practice for when mine goes, although i'm still low mileage at 189k

My response would have been the same as Handyman's - although I've not seen or changed one. You well know the trials of the hydraulic failure best avoided! Interested to read up on your experiences with this one, as no doubt it will come one day (123k on mine so far and no rattles yet). I remember the Doc of BX fame changed one in a 2.1TD and reported it took 10 hours, and he would rather sand paper delicate parts of his anatomy than do another - which must make it pretty horrible :twisted:

Having tackled a similar one (C5 2.0 HDi with a 6 speed ML box), my tip would be ignore fighting with unclipping the gear change cables, and just unbolt the whole bracket off the back of the box - 3 off 13mm (IIRC :?: ) reached over the diff - takes a couple of minutes.

Just to calm down all the talk of the thrust bearing being about to fail any day soon my old HDi had a similar rattle for the 40k odd miles I had the car for and AFAIK its still going fine to this day.

I have had this exact problem on a couple of XMs, as soon as you touch the pedal or increase revs the rattle stops, on one of them I had just fitted a new release bearing! They both went on clattering so I just used to blip the throttle to stop it, the other one which had a recent clutch replacement, eventually stopped doing it.

I wish! No, no chance of the patter of tiny footsteps for a while, we're far too knackered!
The wedding is now the 7th and after having to move it twice so far we ain't doing it again!

Jim - My HDi Exclusive has had exactly the same symptoms for at least the last 50,000 miles without any noticable deterioration - Its the original Citroen clutch which has now done 186,000 miles and at the moment still works perfectly. I wouldn't worry about it unless the noise bothers you

Drive it till it drops. You have other cars should this happen. Less money ,less work and less wear on your knees :-D
