shuddering, vibrating at tickover

Unread post by johntom »

Hi
I have a 2004/54 reg 2.0 hdi C5 (last of the first shape), which has done 91k. The car has started to judder and shake at tickover (below 1200 rpm in fact), the juddering can be felt through the car. When the bonnet is lifted the engine is moving/vibrating front to back, which settles down when the car is revved. There are no engine warning lights on, performance is down and the fuel consumption is up. Because of this I think the fault is with the engine/injection system, not the engine mounts. I have just changed the EGR valve and cleaned the carbon from the pipework but it didn't make any difference, yet a while ago i fitted an egr blanking plate which did stop the shaking however it caused the EML to come on with egr flow errors so i removed it ? the juddering is there when ticking over regardless of engine temperature.
Help please !

Sounds like mine did a couple of years ago.
It was a dud injector.

Good to see use being made of the YouTube embedding feature :D

A Lexia session will be needed to diagnose the dead injector... There's a whole host of people who have them and may do you a read...

See this thread for details..

Please note that my Lexia is still very unwell

I would agree, a faulty injector, unbalanced fuel delivery is causing the power to be down on one cylinder.

Hi and thanks for your replies
strangely, when i bought the car 12 months ago i found a new looking injector in the glove box. I rang the previous owner who told me he had used some dodgy diesel and ended up fitting a new injector pump (and cam belt) plus 4 new injectors (about 20,000 miles ago now). Apparently one of the new injectors failed (the one in the glove box) which he then replaced with a used one. Injectors 1,2, and 4 look new, number 3 is a little rusty ?

My mate had same problem as you on a C5 2.0 hdi about 6 months ago, we checked everything on the car and finally we found it. It was the injector copper washer not sealing properly and causing a missfire sometimes it did it and other times it didn't, befor you spend any money just replace all four injector washers and come back and tell us if your problem has gone, Think all four washers cost £2 from a diesel specialist try this first. I am 100% sure this is the same problem aswell.

Hi
Can I DIY remove the injectors or do I need a special puller ?

Also I have the old injector, could I unplug each injector on the car, one at a time ( perhaps plug the old injector in to the loom to fool the ecu) to see which injector on the car is duff, ie no difference when it's unplugged ? Or will this potentially damage something ? Just thought if an injector is down then potentially there will be no difference when it's unplugged ?

I don't think they are to difficult to get out but don't disconnect one, it's at present firing on all cylinders although not evenly, if you stop one working the engine will try and leap out of the car.
