what is the most comfortable Citroen?

simple question - might throw up a poll later

which is the most comfortable Citroen? including cornering, ramps, braking, etc ...

I've driven a few, but would like the view of all of the experienced drivers out there ...

I've driven Xantia's, XM's, C5's and C6's.

Out of all of them the XM has the comfiest seats and the smoothest suspension.

The seats on the C6 were hard and the suspension much firmer.

We've got 2 Xantia Exclusives. One a V6 and the other an HDi.

The suspension on the Xantia's isn't as hard as the C6 but it's not as soft as the XM. The seats in the Xantia are also a lot narrower and not as arm chair like as the XM's.

Heres some more Chris.

A well sorted XM is much better than a non hydractive Xantia in my opinion, that's just suspension, the seats make it for me. When people say armchairs, they're not kidding. Arm rest and all, that's why the handbrake had to be moved, priorities and all that

Its been a while since I've been in a DS but the seats in that I remember sinking into quite a lot, more than the XM IIRC. Can't comment on the others.

the cx was great on the straight, but damn it hated corners

i suppose my question is: is a (sorted) XM is much better a (sorted) hydractive Xantia mk2?

from memory the xantia mk2 was smoother ... but i'm trying to make sure i was not just incorrectly remembering favourable experiences

The CXs are great for comfort - even the stiffer GTi Turbos are still very smooth.

Get a nice early Series 1 CX with the mega comfortable seats (makes XM seats like a wood bench) and it's great.

Try sitting in the back of a Series 1 CX Prestige - all that room and hugely comfortable seats! You do start to nod off actually...

i belive the earlier the hydraulic citroen the smoother it was,

the D's not only had deap armchair seats but also have inch thick foam under the carpets,

a good dersh (2CV ) is prety good too,

I know it's not a Citroen but the comfiest French car I've had/been in is the Renault 25 V6 Turbo Ph1 & Ph2 VERY underrrated cars

I've driven CX, GSA, BX, Xantia over the last 11 years and would say that out of that bunch, the Xantia has the best overall ride with the CX having the most sensational (but not actually the comfiest)

Rationale: my CXs, all early Mk1s, and each having rebuilt suspension, really do float in long, slow sensations but in a brilliantly controlled way. i.e. not all over the place - really good grip but tight corners and switchbacks together with the amazing steering system made for a car that leans way too much for comfort. It can take speed bumps, road works 'ramps', pavé roads like it's smooth as silk: it could give a 2CV a run for its money over that ploughed field too! This, together with the seats and the steering that gives no road vibrations through, makes it phenomenal. But! the mad body roll together with a fair bit of vibration through the pedals mars it quite a bit.

The GSA is similar in all the same as the CX less the steering advantage.

The BX (mine were both series 1s with the roller bearings front susension arms and mega soft seats) were surprisingly floaty after I'd given them the works, but seemed a bit underdamped and skittish on the thin tyres - they rolled quite a bit too so didn't improve enough over the CX or GSA in overall ride.

That's why the Xantia wins for me: very well insulated over all the oldies, big rubber suspension mountings to absorb the vibrations, shorter travel suspension so not so good on the speed bumps etc, the far better body roll control and grip and relative softness and sensible body motion but retaining just enough floatiness makes it special enough and sensible enough in equal measure.

For me the Xantia ride wins! (still need a CX from time to time

)
