tapping noise.. continue

Unread post by JamesVTS »

since my last thread i have changed all 16 tappets. i thought they're the caused of the tapping niose but their not. we also changed cambelt and tensioner but still all that didnt sort the problem.. they still tapping like mad. we even blow the oil passage just incase it was blocked and still didnt sort the problem. one of the machnic told me the reason that they making those tapping noise in the first place it could be 3 things: 1st is the tappets (changed that) 2nd is wrong setting of the cambelt (changed and adjusted that) 3rd is camshaft itself but the machanic didnt think it could be that as it look fine. i had 3 machnic scrathed their head, ran out of the ideas what could still cause the problem. Any one here had the similar problem as mine please give us an idea what could be wrong with this damn engine. much appreciated.

Have you tried running the motor with it's rocker cover off yet ?? Sure it'll make a mess, but if it does stop tapping the rocker cover touching one something is the problem.

James -
Have you tried the wellknown stetoscope test pinpointing the source of noise ?
Some engines just won't run noiseless on hi-quality thin synt oils, like a 0W30 (or 0W40) type, despite these oil's superior lubing qualities ...
- but admittently that's a long shot [:I]
Another long shot is something entirely different fooling you, like a ticking alternator. Can be tested running the engine with this drivebelt removed. Charge lamp will stay on of course ...

the other solution i can try is using different grade of engine oil. at the moment im running 15w40. might give 10w40 or even 5w40 a try and see if thats help, but the book recommended you run on 15w40. Another thing is that someone from other forums think it could be the "guides" thats causing all those tapping noise. He had similar problem like mine with both of his 306gti-6 before and he fixed the problem after he changed those guides. any other idea lads?

Did you ever check to see if the tappets were hitting the inside of the rocker cover?
The guy with the valve guides must have accidentally fixed something else that was actually the cause but thought it was them because in my opinion, any valve guides worn enough to rattle like that would have so much oil pumping through them to suffocate you and everybody else in a 10 mile radius in blue smoke.

Must agree. If the valve guides are that worn the smoke would be like 007's motor trying to out run some super villain. If it's any use I just changed the oil on my 8 valve Xsara VTR. It rattled a lot but now it's running with Total Quartz 7000 (10-40W I think) and the noise rattle is now very much quieter. Second VTR and apart from the oil 'N' filter change every thing seems ok.

If the tappet cover has been removed & the rubber gasket not replaced & then the cover retightened, hard, the gasket being fairly thick would compress below its normal thickness.
As I say, only a theory but I suspect my 16V is doing this following my bright idea of getting it powder coated and then finding out what the cost & availability of a new gasket (set) was in Kangaroo country.[:0]
I do feel that a cheap auto stethoscope could be a good investment for you.
I was laughed at by my mob when I bought one a couple of years ago (about A$10....."Hey Dad, wanna check my heartbeat...") but I now have to ask their permission to borrow it almost; very handy tool in these situations and extremely sensitive.
