What type of clutch fitted

No, they use the SAME release arm, all that it does is PULL AWAY From the box on a pull clutch, and on a push clutch the arm is in the outer positon to pull towards the box to push the clutch...

No different parts..

90 HDi's use a PUSH CLUTCH... go have a look at prices!!

HDi 90 clutchs are around 80 quid, HDi 110bhp clutch's are around 170 quid...

I'm confused, on service.citroen.com they both look like they work the same, the release arm points in the same direction (towards the cabin) and the clutch cable arm is on the same side (ie looking down from above it turns anti-clockwise pushing the forks onto the clutch).

I can't find a clutch cable arm that fits on the engine side (ie doesn't point over the gearbox).

I've always been lead to believe push clutches are better (not sure why) so if it's just a case of swapping the clutch cable arm, then a later push cluctch could be fitted to an XUD right?

I DIDN't say anything about an arm pointing over the engine...

I meant on the PULL clutch the arm is positioned NEARER the gearbox, and on a push clutch its positioned AWAY from the box...

The release fork is a different shape between the pull and push clutches - although that's not to say that a pull clutch arm wouldn't operate a push clutch, but I doubt it would work the other way around. My mate had a W reg 306 and we changed the clutch on that it was cable operated push type - I checked in service.citroen and all the early HDi cars (Xantia, Xsara, Berlingo) has push clutches. If the box you fitted Xac had a pull clutch arm, think you may have been misled about its origins....

Jim provided the gearbox, and I'm sure others have fitted the hdi90 gearbox to their XUDs.
On service.citroen both had the release forks moving in the same direction.
The lever the cable operates was on the same side, ie pointing away from the engine, so rotating anti clockwise when looking down from above.
I can't understand how the same action can suddenly produce a push action.
If the cable lever was pointing towards the engine so it rotated clockwise fine, or if the release forks shaft was fitted the otherside of the gearbox spline (but then it could never fit an XUD)
Anyone got a pic of each, or just a pic of a hdi clutch cable lever?

On a push clutch the action is transferred from the end of the inner cable ie the arm is pulled towards the back of the car and rotates anti-clock when viewed from above. On the pull clutch the action is transferred from the end of the outer cable, and the arm is pushed towards the front of the car, and rotates clockwise from above.

OH God I've started something with this simple question

Yea, I got a later book to try and get HDi wiring diagrams for the immobiliser and transponder pickup... but nothing..

Paul re your above comment I have the french book which has the wiring diagrams, Do still want that.

At least I've bought the right cable for the clutch

Inner - the wiry bit in the middle
Outer - the tubey bit on the outside

That's what I thought you meant, which is what's confused me when trying to visualise it.
The pedal acts on the inner cable pulling it through the tube that is the outer cable.
So I'm having trouble visualising how the tube pushes the arm forward by pulling the cable through it via th pedal.

Cables do funny things! Because one end of the inner is fixed and you pull on the other, then only thing that can give is the outer, sliding along the cable effectively. There is a minor change in the bend of the cable to accommodate the change in positon of the end of the outer. Watch the operation of the clutch under the bonnet whilst someone else presses the pedal and you'll see the end of the outer move forward to operate the clutch arm
