What type of clutch fitted

Hi All,

I'm wondering what type of clutch is fitted to my xantia 2.0HDi 90hp

ie hydraulic or otherwise.

The HDi 90 uses the BE3/5 gearbox which has a 'pull-type' cable operated clutch.

In fact the same as a 1.9TD...

Perhaps also worth mentioning is that it is completely different from a HDi 110. That uses the ML5T and a hydraulic clutch.

Thanks for the replies,

I've just checked the citroen service web site and as suggested it is the same cable.

As an aside, i just spent the weekend fixing the front wheel bearing and brakes,no more whin and no judder.

Manually (no press) changed the bearing with a mechanic friend only took 2hours to do.

. So managed to watch the cycling all weekend SWMBO was very good about it. I wonder what she'll have me do

Also found a company in Brum who do CV joints for the car @£19 much cheaper than a new shaft @ £100.

HDi 90s use PUSH CLUTCH!!

They are NOT the same as the XUDs pull clutch.... Early ones are Cable operated, all on Xantias, then later 90bhp HDi switched to Hydraulic clutch..

Think you're right Paul - service.citroen certainly shows a push clutch. Interstingly, Kenny is right too, in that the same cable is used for both push and pull clutches

Can't see any evidence on there though that later Xantia HDi 90s went to a hydraulic clutch. Later cars (eg Picasso) use hydraulics on the HDi 90.

Edit: actually, re-reading, think that is what you were saying anyway...

I based it on the fact that Xac and I once fitted an HDi 90 gearbox to a 1.9TD and there was no need to swap the clutch fork. It all seemed identical to the 1.9TD to me at the time...

My apologies if my post was misleading.

The BoL strikes again. My understanding from that was that the push type was fitted to all petrol models only except the 2.0 16v. All turbo diesels using a pull type.

No no... I didn't mean Xantia 90bhp HDi went hydraulic, they didn't!

I meant the HDi 90 ENGINE equpit cars went hydraulic around 2003...

The XUD PULL CLuch design was dropped, the HDi 110bhp Pull Clutch is a Different design, in that it IS a two piece clutch installed in two seperate pieces, then when the Box is back on the engine you then have to "Mate" the release bearing into the pressure plate to make them a one pice pull clutch! The XUD should of been like that - however, on that note I beleve its weak in design as theres been a lot of reports of the release bearing colapsing, or pulling through the pressure plate..

Early BoL books didnt even cover the HDi engine, and later books dont even have wiring diagrams for them!! The Bol has tooo much Cit and Paste, and NO proof reading!!

A very POOR publication in later years!!

They Are the same house, and Ive Always beleve its simply the "Cage" that the end of the pull cable sits in, and the direction of the release arm thats all... those box's are idenical, but the 90 HDi is a push clutch... so this prooves a XUD pull clutch equipt car will go in a push clutch setup..

Very true. I have noticed the flagrant cut and paste from earlier editions of the book, even in the HDi sections which my book does cover.

Yea, I got a later book to try and get HDi wiring diagrams for the immobiliser and transponder pickup... but nothing..

Pretty certain we didn't fit Cassy's old release arm to the new gearbox, ie we just fitted the box straight on as you would any old XUD box, suggesting the 90HDi it came from used a XUD pull clutch.
