205 Unleaded?

Unread post by allmond »

Hi
My son's girlfriend is looking at an H registered Peugeot 205 with a 1.1 petrol engine. Can anyone confirm if it's leaded or unleaded petrol? The present owner says they've been using unleaded, but it doesn't have a narrow fuel filler neck.
Thanks
Jamie

A narrow neck only specifies that you MUST use unleaded (catalytic converters, etc).
Most cars of this era will use unleaded, subject to a slight change in the ignition timing. I'd guess the 205 falls in this category, being ally-headed so should have harder valve inserts to cope. No doubt someone here will soon give you a definitive answer; failing that, a quick look on the 'net should give a good answer!
If you know the engine type (normally the first few characters on the engine number plate), then you may be able to tie it up with this Citroen site as they used the same engines of that era:

H reg should run on unleaded and will probably be happy on either.
All cars had to run on unleaded from about a year earlier.

Thanls for the replies so far. There was no Peugeot handbook with the car. I looked at the Tramontana site, which seems to indicate that the engine is OK on unleaded. There was, however, a Haynes manual in the car which stated quite categorically that the engine (WX series if I remember right) cannot run on unleaded. With LRP being phased out, she's unwilling to risk it.

Unleaded became compulsory during G reg or possibly earlier. I know that for a fact.
When was they Haynes manual printed, not that they are much of a source of facts anyway.

Could it be the XW series? There's only a few versions that aren't happy on regular unleaded, but will run on Super Unleaded

the XW series got phased out in 88 E-F reg. H reg will be TU series & most definately be U/L or LRP.

Granted, RandR; I would be very surprised if a 1990 Pug wouldn't run on unleaded, knowing these continental types! I though the only cars from 1990 that woudln't run on unleaded came from Austin Rover...

Now I'm more confused! The Haynes manual had an additional section for the "newer" cars, and said the XW was fitted to the smaller engines (and couldn't be converted to unleaded) while it said the TU was fitted to the GTi only, but would happily run on unleaded.
The person who's selling it is on holiday for a week now so I can't have another look 'till they get back. Ho Hum.
Thanks for all the help anyway.

I used to have an E Registered 205 1.0 XE (TU series engine) and that ran happily on unleaded for the 5 years I had it.

On the indside of a D reg 309 filler cap I owned it had a green ring to say it could run on unleaded. Out of curiousity, is there anything similar in the filler cap or on the inside of the filler neck.
There used to be small plates with 92RON or 95RON to give some indication of type of fuel required. I think the lower the RON number the lower the star rating. 2 star is the equivalent of unleaded from what I can remember.
From the age of the car I think it should run quite happilly on unleaded

Thanks again - no, nothing on the filler cap - no easy clues like that.
