Exhaust Back Box and Anti-lock brakes - really?

OK chaps moving on to my next problem....
My back box has started to split down the seam and as I've let it go so far I'm thinking about replacing it rather than bodging it. So far I have had 4 quotes ranging from £146 at Kwikfit

to £80 at a local chain. The first 3 quotes went pretty straightforwardly but the last one asked me whether the car had ABS or not. When I said it had she then said 'Ah, that's the more expensive one'. Bit confused about this. Is this really an issue and the other 3 places haven't mentioned it or is she mistake? How can the ABS effect the exhaust?

Sorry, can't help you with your ABS question. Our cars are very similar, though mine doesn't have ABS (or aircon). Mine only has a back box, which I had to replace several years ago, bought for £50 from local motor factor. Had 1 yr warranty, but it's still fine

Are exhausts so much more expensive now?

I remember having to play around a bit with the mounting brackets, as it replaced the original Citroen back box

The £80 was for it including fitting, so I guess thats not too bad assuming your £50 was for the part only.

If that had been an HDi 90 BHP you could have had the brand new one I have sitting in the garage for a bargain price.

Been a while since I checked, but they might be the same (hatch/estate certainly aren't though)

Pretty sure they are different, at least, when I have been looking they are different part numbers from '98.

No comment on the ABS though anybody?

I'd steer clear of somebody that thought the ABS system had anything to do with the exhaust, whether they were the cheapest or not.

Distinct lack of understanding of basic vehicle mechanics or maybe a wind-up?

If you have t'Net access, try Bosal as they have a good parts supply system through distributors and their products ain't half bad.

If you want to pick up on HDIs offer, it should be the same back box for late 1.9 models and the HDi range, but do check. You could use Bosals on-line parts catalogue as it does allow the public access.

I will be avoiding the place that is confused about ABS, they weren't the cheapest anyway.

You have to be careful about Citroen part numbers, as they will generate a differing part number for the same or a similar part that may well fit a number of models but may have a slight variant, ie chromed tailpipe, etc.

Worth check a pattern parts suppliers catalogue, as they do it the other way round, they try and get one part to fit as many models as possible.

I've checked Penguin and the same list goes for the Mk 1s except that there is another listed for the XUD9S..number 1726 81

Get a price from the local factors - needed a new box on the Picasso a while back. £100 fitted, or £28, including a new clamp, from the factors. Not a bad mark up from the fast fit places!

Sorry for the continuing stupid questions but when I look online for an exhaust it appears that mine may or may not have a catalytic converter. Is there an easy way to tell whether mine would have one? Does anyone know what the difference would be for the silencers?

Richard, I have checked prices with a couple of local factors and the cheapest price they offered was £65, so thought I would try the exhaust suppliers on ebay (£38 delivered), but the cat issue is causing me a problem.

Gibbo, I'm afraid ignorance is not necessarily bliss in my case! I know my engine is an XUD9 but what are all the other letters for (S, SD, TE)? I have had a look under my bonnet but can't see any reference on any of the markings to identify my engine.

I thought this would be straightforward, I thought wrong

Hi Penguin, your luck could be in!

I had other parts to chase on Citroen Service this afternoon and looked up your rear box. There is only one supercession part number that covers all 1.9TD & HDi rear silencer boxes, Mk1 & 2 saloons - 1726JO.

The Eurorep part number is E128 C9 8. This is Citroens cheaper replacement parts line.

The Bosal number is: 135-657

Check with HDi as to what part number he has, if it is an OE box, it will be either of the Citroen numbers. Chances are, if it is a saloon diesel box, it will fit, but you will need to check.

Gibbo's part number list no longer exists as much of the Xantia stocks have been rationalized as Citroen consider the car obsolete under their 10 year rule.

Your car is too late to not have a catalyst. They became mandatory in 1992.
