How to dismantle a Xantia? Which bits to save?

This is the disk that came off the front. I know the tailors tape measure is not very precise but the disk diameter looks like 265/266mm. The car had/has 14inch wheels. If I dont need the calipers for this current MOT exercise I am happy to find a new home for them, rather than leave them festering in my shed.

Ah good idea... I got my sizes mixed up earlyer... They are the smaller sizes...

Nice idea to measure them.. Lol..

I've just looked on Cit Serv and 266mm is the early hatch type which is what I'm after! Those discs don't look badly worn either, so again, if not needed by yourself, I'd be happy to provide a new home for them!

Thanks for your interest Geoff. I am in the fortunate position of having the use of my Dad's Vauxhall Vectra at the moment, so the getting the Xant through its MOT has turned into more of a step by step project rather than a race against time. I have a "handbrake" fail item and just in case its caliper related I probably want to hang onto the spares for a little while. In the end I don't think I will need them.

My current focus is to clear the space in front of my house by dismantling the old xantia so that I can get the MOT work done. I got evicted from my usual spot for such work along the industrial estate by a managing agent for the site who just so happened to pick the sunniest day of the year when I was replacing my strut top for a visit. He gave me the "private land-no car repairs" speech.

If you are willing to reimburse the postage and take a risk on the condition of the parts I would be happy to send them to you.

Hi Neil,

I'm in no rush, so timing isn't an issue. I shall buy a refurb kit and as a minimum replace the main seal. They are not siezed solid are they? And presumably still full of LHM?

Thinking about it I may pass on the discs afterall, the years of standing may of done them no favours.

I'll happily pay up front for delivery Neil. I assume you're in Newcastle?

Heres a picture of the chevron-less grille. The flash has bleached the colour slightly its really a nice dark blue but I have photographed the code
which no doubt translates into something more exotically named.

As far as other dismantling goes, it has no seats, carpets, the subframe bolts are out front and back ready for a ceremonial dropping, and I am really chuffed with myself cos I have actually managed to remove the fascia. Now that I have found the 3 nuts behind the windscreen wiper mechanism behind the rubber grommets it came out a bit easier than the last time I tried :D

I will have to have a bit poke about at the back tomorrow because I think there probably are a couple of bolts at the front end of the rear subframe.
I have removed the 4 bolts at the rear of the subframe which attach it to the floor but unless it is a marvel of balance I would expect some anchoring at the front edge of the rear subframe.

Hi Neil,

DO NOT forget to recover the K joints for the strut feeds... ones under the LHM tank, the other at the rear subframe...

What spec was the car?? Did it have ABS?? I ask, as I could be after a rear wheel bearing.. I am FULLY aware though that they do NOT come off complete.. The bearing is part of the rear hubs... so I need an ABS one..

Ill explain removal here, undo the massive 36mm nut or similar.. then tap, or KNOCK the hub off what will happen then the bearing will come off with the Hub and leave the Inner race on the stub..

Im happy with that as long as the bearing can be retained together...

It does/did have ABS. I have removed all the subframe bolts front and back and have been checking round, hacksaw at the ready, to make sure that they will have a good chance of getting left on the ground when the scrapman calls.

May have a bit of bother stopping the wheel from turning when trying to undo a very tight hub nut with 5 years of inactivity and rust maybe adding to the difficulty. I don't have a 36mm socket at the moment-haven't as yet had the need to remove a hub nut but could probably borrow/buy one.

NOTHING will turn.. the Nut is on a static STUB! The only thing that may move will be the swinging arm....

Much appriciated... Its rare a bearing to go on these machines.. Ive now only come across THREE rear bearing failiures out of the hundred or so Xantias passed me...

Just removed the rear hub. I used a 41mm hexagon socket to remove the hub nut although it may be that the correct size of the nut is 40mm.

I just thought I'd give the breaker a free bump and say that the P&P on this item was superb and the turnaround was nice and trouble free.
